Job Description
Position Title: Maintenance Technician II – Plumber

Pay Grade: 12 Period of Employment: 12 months

Description Approved/ Revised:7/2026 FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Supervised by and/or Reports to: Maintenance Foreman and/or Supervisor of Maintenance

General Responsibilities: Maintain plumbing systems and devices in working order throughout the school system; install and repair equipment/systems and devices.

Essential Duties:

  • Advises supervisors of safety violations.
  • Maintains, services, troubleshoots, and installs plumbing systems and devices
  • Performs preventive maintenance such as inspecting, tightening and calibrating for water fountains, water heaters, toilets, urinals, bathrooms etc.
  • Performs work on appliances, including dishwasher systems, water heaters, boiler room equipment, icemakers, kitchen equipment, etc.
  • Repairs or installs fixtures, including circulating pumps, flush valves, lavatory equipment, water fountains, toilets, and lavatories.
  • Cleans drainage lines, main sewer lines, and clay and grease traps.
  • Inspects and rebuilds backflow preventer devices per the City of Manassas requirements.
  • Maintains field irrigation systems and inspects service performed by contractors on the fire sprinkler systems.
  • Trains employees on the proper use and operation of tools, materials, and techniques.
  • Performs annual water (lead) testing.
  • Reads school water meters, gathers data, and reports findings to the City of Manassas.
  • Assists throughout maintenance when there is a need for additional personnel due to absences or in emergency situations.
  • Reports problems with assigned vehicles; maintains vehicle cleanliness as well as oil, gas, and coolant levels.
  • Responds to emergency duty assignments on both a daily and on-call basis.
  • Performs work in a timely manner and within given deadlines.
  • Functions as the Crew Leader when needed.
  • Assumes responsibility for assigned tools.
  • Moves equipment between school system facilities.
  • Assists in snow removal.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requisite Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to read, write, and work from blueprints, schematics, and drawings of plumbing systems.
  • Proficient in all aspects of plumbing repair and maintenance.
  • Ability to plan, assign, and supervise the work of junior tradesmen.

Requisite Education and Experience:

  • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Plumbing technical degree, journeyman plumbing card or certificate from accredited plumbing institution and a Master Plumber license preferred.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Backflow Preventer Certification preferred.

Phyical Requirements:

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and

interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and

personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel

objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of

office related equipment, such as, but not limited to: a personal computer, calculator,

copier, and fax machine. Some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching,

standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, or repetitive motions required.
