Job description

The Maintenance Worker II is responsible for performing a variety of skilled routine maintenance and construction tasks within the county’s parks, trails, and facilities. This position primarily involves maintaining the department’s buildings, grounds, and equipment to ensure facilities are functional, clean, safe, and presentable to the public. The employee is classified as an essential employee and may be required to work outside normal hours, including weekends and holidays, during emergencies or inclement weather.

This position requires completing documentation to grant the County of Chester permission to obtain a 3-year Motor Vehicle Record (MVR). A criminal background check is also required.

Responsibilities include:
  • Assisting and leading general repairs and maintenance (e.g., electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting, special event setup, etc.).
  • Operating heavy equipment such as loaders, backhoes, tractors, and vehicles if qualified.
  • Maintaining supplies and parts inventory.
  • Diagnosing and servicing vehicles and small equipment, including minor repairs and welding.
  • Performing grounds maintenance (mowing, weeding, trash pickup, planting, trail repair).
  • Conducting safety and maintenance inspections of facilities.
  • Applying pesticides under supervision of a certified applicator.
  • Recordkeeping and assisting with natural resource management activities.
  • Snow removal using hand tools and equipment up to 12,000 GVW.
  • Facility maintenance and repairs, including painting and equipment replacement.
  • Performing other duties, tasks, and special projects as assigned.
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Trade school or equivalent experience in trades such as plumbing, carpentry, roofing, masonry, electrical.
  • Knowledge of operating basic tools and equipment.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Teamwork and ability to follow instructions.
  • Manual dexterity and multi-tasking skills.
  • Experience with equipment operation.
  • CPR and first aid certification within one year of hire.
  • Valid driver’s license.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
  • Minimum of two years in building and/or grounds maintenance or relevant trades.
  • Problem-solving, organizational skills, and ability to prioritize.
  • Knowledge of county policies and ability to read construction drawings.
  • Class A driver’s license may be required.

Additional background checks, physicals, drug tests, and assessments will be conducted post-offer.

Computer Skills:
  • Basic knowledge of Computerized Maintenance Management Systems.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and internet research.
Physical Demands:

Frequent standing, walking, reaching, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, and driving. Occasionally pushing up to 100 pounds, working with machinery, climbing ladders, and working in various weather conditions.

Work Environment:
  • Moderate to loud noise levels.
  • Exposure to weather, fumes, chemicals, dust, and pollen.
  • Work may be performed alone or with a crew depending on the assignment.
