Maintenance Technician II – FedEx Industrial Maintenance
Overview
Supports the FedEx Industrial Maintenance team to perform preventative and predictive maintenance and repair of material handling systems. Utilizes prescribed processes for mechanical power transmission, electrical, PLC/controls, welding/fabrication, and other industrial maintenance systems. Troubleshoots component and system issues.
Essential Functions
- Provide preventative and predictive maintenance and repair of material handling systems, demonstrating competency in at least two specialty skills among mechanical power transmission, electrical, and or PLC/controls with basic welding/fabrication skills.
- Troubleshoot, diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical problems and failures within the material handling system, escalating more complex issues to higher level technicians or management.
- Adhere to all applicable safety standards, attend safety meetings and required trainings, and address all safety concerns.
- Respond to sort calls to diagnose problems and make repairs.
- Use Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) software to enter and retrieve prescribed data.
- Participate in smaller scope projects and work a flexible schedule, including all days and shifts as the business need dictates.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Examples of Tasks (Mechanical)
- Identify and repair conveyor belt tracking issues by replacing or repairing bearings, pulleys, etc.
- Diagnose power transmission failures by determining failed components such as motors, gearboxes, locked pulleys, or rollers.
- Read and interpret mechanical drawings and manuals.
Examples of Tasks (Electrical)
- Use a digital multimeter on AC/DC voltage, continuity, and resistance settings to find failed components and shorted wires.
- Test relays or contactors to determine which contacts are bad.
- Read and interpret electrical drawings, schematics, and manuals.
Examples of Tasks (PLC/Controls)
- Open PLC programs offline.
- Troubleshoot electrical controls issues utilizing the I/O lights on a PLC.
Examples of Tasks (Welding/Fabrication)
- MIG and stick weld in multiple positions (vertical, overhead, etc.).
- Weld new parts together using appropriate rods, wire, and gas.
- Fabricate basic parts such as guards or brackets.
- Use oxygen/acetylene torch.
Minimum Education
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Certificates in Industrial Maintenance/Mechatronics, electrical or mechanical trade, or related area and an associate degree in a related field preferred.
Minimum Experience
- Two (2) years experience in Industrial Maintenance/Mechatronics with competency in at least two specialty skills in mechanical power transmission, electrical, or PLC/Controls, with basic welding/fabrication skills required.
- Related military experience will be considered.
- An associate degree in an Industrial Maintenance, electrical, mechanical trade, or related certificates may be considered equivalent to experience.
- Multiple certificates and degrees may be assessed by management and HR for relevancy.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Follow procedures as directed by work orders or higher level technicians/management.
- Utilize Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) software for data entry and retrieval.
- Solve basic mechanical or electrical problems, including understanding of basic engineering formulas.
- Diagnose mechanical power transmission and electrical issues by troubleshooting at the component level.
- Effective verbal and written communication within the department to peers, managers, and vendors.
- Follow detailed instructions.
- Software skills, including Microsoft Office suite and other web-based applications.
- Time management and organizational skills.
Job Conditions
- Use hand tools and possibly power tools.
- Work in hot or cold temperatures.
- Stand, walk, bend, stoop, and squat as required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Desired location: Charlotte, North Carolina. Employees required to work at the FedEx location five days a week.
