The City of Roanoke is seeking three individuals to serve as Maintenance Technician I, working on a Turf and Landscape Crew. The role involves turf maintenance activities across the City Rights-of-Way (ROW), adhering to a mowing cycle, and operating various equipment such as Ventrac, zero-turn, and walk-behind mowers, along with string trimmers, edgers, and leaf blowers. Responsibilities include semi-skilled landscape maintenance like minor tree pruning, aerating, overseeding, mulching, turf renovations, and other duties as needed, as well as operating heavy and light equipment for snow removal.
Candidates must be able to obtain a valid Class B CDL license with air brake and tanker endorsements within 6 months of employment and may need to acquire a Registered Technician Pesticide License and Fertilizer Applicator Certification within 12 months.

Summary: Performs skilled work in maintenance of facilities and equipment, including operation of motorized equipment.
Essential Duties: Includes operating street sweepers, excavators, bulldozers, front-end loaders, performing repairs and renovations on fields and grounds, operating cranes and motor graders, stormwater inspection tasks, pesticide application, asphalt leveling, minor building repairs, painting, trash collection, emergency response, fabrication and installation of traffic control devices, and potentially supervising crews.
Sign Shop Responsibilities: Maintenance and repair of traffic signals, street lights, electronic components, installation of signals and communication cables, emergency repairs, record-keeping, and system modifications. May participate in snow removal and holiday decoration installation.
Supervisory Responsibilities: May supervise a small crew or act in the absence of higher-level technicians.
Qualifications: High school diploma or GED required; technical training in electrical/electronics preferred. Valid Virginia driver’s license and CDL Class B within six months required. IMSA Traffic Signal Level I certification within two years preferred. Ability to work at heights up to 40 ft, in various weather conditions, and possess good communication skills. Experience in trades, with 1-3 years preferred.
Additional Requirements: Ability to interpret technical documents, apply common sense instructions, and handle problems. Valid driver’s permit and possibly pesticide certification depending on assignment. Physical ability to perform job tasks, including lifting up to 25 pounds, and working outdoors in various weather conditions. Noise levels are usually loud, with exposure to mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, and airborne particles.
