Job summary

Ash Grove Cement is seeking a Maintenance Technician I to maintain, troubleshoot, and improve the reliability of mechanical systems in a cement manufacturing facility. This role requires completing the Maintenance Trainee program or equivalent experience and emphasizes preventive maintenance and safety.

The position supports kilns, mills, and material-handling equipment, with a Monday–Friday 6:30am–2:30pm shift. Comprehensive benefits are provided and growth opportunities exist within CRH family.

What you'll be contributing

Under general supervision, the Maintenance Technician I maintains, troubleshoots, and improves the reliability of mechanical systems in a cement manufacturing facility. This is a qualified position that requires completion of the Maintenance Trainee program and/or equivalent outside experience demonstrating the ability to safely perform core maintenance tasks as defined in the skills matrix. The role focuses on preventive maintenance, condition monitoring, and shutdown maintenance to reduce unplanned downtime and extend equipment life for critical assets, including kilns, mills, and material-handling systems.

Promote and follow all plant safety guidelines.

Additional duties as assigned by supervisor.

Independently perform routine maintenance inspections, basic fabrication, mechanical troubleshooting, and repairs on plant equipment (e.g., pumps, bulk transport equipment, and rotating equipment).

Repair and maintain all existing mechanical equipment and facilities. Ensure all repaired equipment is properly lubricated.

Install or assist with the installation of new plant equipment and facilities, including major maintenance and capital projects.

Inspect equipment and identify defects; determine appropriate timing for repairs to reduce failure risk; make necessary adjustments; and report repair work and inspection findings requiring follow-up to the supervisor.

Troubleshoot equipment failures and apply working knowledge of plant mechanical systems.

Inspects plant equipment, makes necessary adjustments, and reports all conditions requiring further attention to the supervisor.

Obtain rigging and signal certification.

Safely operate shop equipment to fabricate parts and repair plant equipment.

Clean and maintain shop equipment, tools, and the work area upon job completion.

Coordinate with electricians and other departments to complete work requiring cross-functional support.

Operate plant and mobile equipment as needed to complete routine and non-routine maintenance work.

Participates in the Plant's Safety Program, follows all safety rules, ensures all work is completed in compliance with plant safety procedures, lockout/tagout requirements, company policies, and conducts repair work using safe rigging and work practices.

To succeed in this position, you will need
  • Ability to read, write and understand warning labels, instructions, signs, etc.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent
  • Ability and skill in performing duties associated with the following functions: rigging practices used when lifting equipment with overhead hoists and cranes; proper millwright practices of setting, leveling and coupling equipment; shop fabrication of guards, ducts and machinery basics; proper plumbing practices used when running water, gas and air lines; and basic carpentry practices.
  • Ability to safely and effectively operate hand tools, power tools, cutting and welding equipment, hand saw, chop saw, drill press, bench grinders, hydraulic iron worker, hydraulic press, forklifts, hyster carry crane, trucks, rigging for cranes, and overhead hoists.
  • Work requires walking over rough surfaces; climbing stairs and ladders; bending; pulling; pushing; lifting heavy repair parts and equipment weighing up to 100 pounds; using a sledgehammer and large wrenches; working in awkward positions and in confined spaces.
  • These knowledge, skills, and abilities are acquired through holding a previous maintenance man bid job, completion of the Ash Grove maintenance training program, or having equivalent experience and training outside of Ash Grove. Prior work history and experience must be documented and verifiable.
What to expect in a cement environment

Work to be performed in a shop environment as well as outdoor exposure throughout the plant. Mild exposure to cement dust, heat, cold, and noise requires compliance with specified safety guidelines and procedures. Exposure to high elevations of up to 250 feet in height. Exposure to all weather conditions. Normal operation of mobile equipment may result in jarring and vibratory exposure.
