Job Description

Reports to:Director of Maintenance and Facilities

General Definition of Work:Performs intermediate / semi-skilled trades work serving as trades worker in General Maintenance / Electrical work in school buildings and facilities, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is
performed under the moderate supervision of the Director of Maintenance and Facilities.

Essential Functions:

  • Assembles and/or repairs furniture for classrooms and offices; assembles and sets up cabinets, equipment, and
    shelving; repairs office machines
  • Troubleshoots system failures; assesses and analyzes maintenance repair needs
  • Inspects playground equipment to ensure user safety
  • Installs and maintains internal and external school signage
  • Repairs doors and windows
  • Installs maps and murals in classrooms
  • Assist in the installation, repairs, and replacement of electrical systems and equipment including lighting,
    electrical outlets, appliances, equipment, breakers, breaker boxes, etc.
  • Installs and repairs exhaust fans; repairs and replaces skylights
  • Performs and/or assists with installs, rebuilds, and maintains plumbing in buildings; installs faucets, flush
    valves, temperate gauges, etc.; troubleshoots, repairs, replaces and fabricates various plumbing fixtures and
    associated equipment
  • Assists in framing, pouring, and finishing concrete fixtures
  • Assists with snow removal and ice control
  • Completes work orders; assists maintenance technicians with various building, facility and ground maintenance tasks
  • Prepares reports, timesheets, logs, and records as required
  • Performs various other tasks associated with general carpentry, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, masonry,
    roofing or related trades/professions

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasionalexertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requiresstanding, walking, speaking or hearing and using hands to finger,handle or feel, frequently requires sitting, reaching with hands and
arms, pushing or pulling and lifting and occasionally requires climbing or balancing; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by
means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms- length; operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment
and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires working near moving mechanical parts; work occasionally requires exposure to bloodborne pathogens and bodily fluids and may be required to
wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic)

Education and Experience:Thorough knowledge of the common practices, tools, and terminology of the maintenance trade; thorough knowledge of the common practices, and tools; general knowledge of the use and characteristics of common building materials; thorough knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions associated with assigned trade; skill in the use of tools and equipment; ability to draw and work from sketches, drawings, plans or specifications; ability to follow and issue oral and written instructions; ability to estimate needed materials and time required for various jobs; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates. A high school diploma or GED and moderate experience in general maintenance, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

License/Edorsements:A valid driver’s license from the Commonwealth of Virginia is required. Possession of certification as a Journeyman Electrician is preferred.
