Job summary

Edgewood University is seeking a skilled Electrical Maintenance Technician to uphold and improve campus electrical and lighting systems. The role involves independent work within the Facilities Operations team to enhance reliability, safety, and energy efficiency across campus facilities.

The candidate should have trade schooling in electrical programs or significant hands-on experience (five years+), with Journeyman license preferred.

Qualifications

  • Successful completion of a trade school electrical program or a minimum of five years of experience in electrical and lighting maintenance and repair preferred.
  • Journeyman Electrician license preferred.
  • Experience with commercial or institutional building electrical systems preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license and successful University MVR check required.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and repair campus electrical and lighting systems following industry guidelines and safety practices.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on lighting systems, including lamps, ballasts, fixtures, and controls.
  • Troubleshoot and repair electrical and lighting issues; replace components as necessary.
  • Assist in planning and implementing lighting upgrades and energy efficiency projects.
  • Coordinate with facilities contractors to ensure projects meet specifications and safety standards.
  • Assist in maintaining equipment inventories and lifecycle replacement planning.
  • Support energy efficiency initiatives and utility incentive programs.
  • Perform general maintenance duties and assist on-call rotations as needed.

Job Description

Primary responsibilities include the maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, and improvement of campus electrical and lighting systems. The position is designed for a skilled technician who can work both independently and as a member of the Facilities Operations team to improve the maintenance, reliability, safety, and energy efficiency of campus facilities.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain and Repair Campus Electrical and Lighting Systems
    • Maintain recommended and appropriate interior and exterior light levels following IES guidelines using appropriate lamps, ballasts, fixtures, and controls.
    • Perform preventive maintenance on campus lighting systems including cleaning and maintaining lamps, ballasts, fixtures, lenses, louvers, and reflective surfaces.
    • Troubleshoot and repair lighting and electrical system issues.
    • Replace ballasts, lamps, fixtures, switches, outlets, and other electrical components as necessary.
    • Identify electrical maintenance needs and report situations requiring specialized contractor services to the Director of Facilities Operations.
    • Assist with planning and implementation of lighting upgrades and replacement projects that improve energy efficiency.
    • Assist with campus re-lamping projects and lighting replacement schedules.
    • Perform maintenance and testing of fire alarm control panels, smoke detectors, and carbon monoxide detection systems as assigned.
    • Enter and complete work orders accurately and in a timely manner using the computerized work order management system.
    • Maintain records of maintenance activities and repairs.
    • Utilize the AkitaBox work order system effectively.
  • Support Facility Maintenance Planning and Asset Management
    • Collect building condition information and report deficiencies, hazards, deterioration, and equipment concerns to the Director of Facilities Operations.
    • Assist in maintaining equipment inventories and asset records.
    • Identify maintenance and replacement needs related to electrical systems and campus infrastructure.
    • Provide recommendations regarding lifecycle replacement of electrical equipment and lighting systems.
    • Assist in documenting maintenance activities and equipment conditions for future planning purposes.
    • Assist the Director of Facilities Operations with coordinating and monitoring the work of electrical contractors to ensure projects are completed in accordance with specifications, safety requirements, and College standards.
    • Assist the Director of Facilities Operations in obtaining quotes and bids for electrical repairs, equipment replacement, and capital improvement projects.
    • Provide technical information and recommendations to support contractor selection, project planning, and scope development for electrical work.
  • Support Energy Efficiency and Sustainability Initiatives
    • Assist with implementation of energy conservation and sustainability projects.
    • Participate in meetings and activities associated with energy efficiency initiatives.
    • Assist in identifying opportunities to improve energy performance through lighting upgrades, controls, and operational improvements.
    • Support evaluation of HVAC and energy-related equipment performance as needed.
    • Help gather information required for utility incentive and rebate programs.
  • Perform General Maintenance Duties
    • Appliance maintenance and repair.
    • Painting and drywall repairs.
    • Basic plumbing repairs.
    • Carpentry work.
    • Locksmith and key work.
    • Structural repairs.
    • Roofing repairs.
    • Small motor repair.
    • HVAC maintenance support.
    • Elevator maintenance coordination.
    • Follow all University policies, department procedures, and safety regulations.
    • Perform other routine Facilities Operations work as assigned by the Director of Facilities Operations.
    • Provide support to other maintenance staff and participate in on-call rotations as needed.
Job Qualifications
Necessary Education or Work Experience
  • Successful completion of a trade school electrical program or a minimum of five years of experience in electrical and lighting maintenance and repair preferred.
  • Journeyman Electrician license preferred.
  • Experience with commercial or institutional building electrical systems preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license and successful University MVR check required.
Required Knowledge and Skills
  • Working knowledge of building electrical systems.
  • Working knowledge of lamps, ballasts, sensors, controls, and fixtures.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair electrical and lighting systems.
  • Knowledge of electrical safety practices and applicable codes.
  • Computer literacy including proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word and the ability to learn new software applications.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service.
  • Ability to meet the public professionally and work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Walking, bending, climbing, and lifting may be required.
  • Attend meetings, seminars, and workshops as required.
  • Ability to be on call for urgent or emergency situations on a rotating basis.
  • Spanish proficiency is a plus.
