South Suburban Park & Recreation District is seeking a Maintenance Technician – Athletic Fields to perform skilled labor for district athletic fields and play courts. The role emphasizes safety, quality maintenance, and timely task completion. You will operate grounds equipment and may supervise part-time staff.

The position requires 18+ years old with a high school diploma and 6 months of related experience; 1 year preferred. A valid Colorado driver license is required upon hire.

Qualifications

• Must be eighteen (18) years of age with a high school diploma or its equivalent.
• Six (6) months of skilled labor experience related to park, field, or related grounds maintenance; one (1) year preferred.
• Any combination of experience, training and education that demonstrates the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Responsibilities

• Maintain athletic fields and play courts, including mowing, painting, chalking, and equipment upkeep.
• Inspect fields and make decisions on removal, renovation or repair.
• Supervise part-time/seasonal staff and volunteers when needed.
• Apply pesticides/herbicides as required and ensure safety.
• Assist with events by delivering materials and setting up equipment.
• Maintain records and reports, follow safety procedures.

Maintenance Technician - Athletic Fields

(Full Time, Non-Exempt)

Hiring Range is $42,065 to $47,708 annually based onqualifications, education and experience as it relates to the position.

Position Summary:

Under the close supervision of the Athletic Fields Supervisor and/or Lead Maintenance Specialist, this position is responsible for accomplishing the various skilled labor tasks that are associated with the accepted maintenance practices for athletic fields and play courts. Performs duties in a manner consistent with the stated values of the organization.

• Ensures the safety of users of District athletic fields and playcourts and keeps District liability risk at a minimum by properly maintaining play areas to established standards.
• Maintains all athletic fields including mowing, burning, spraying, dragging, lining, painting, replacing backstop boards, pouring cement base posts and chalking athletic fields.
• Replaces tennis nets, straps, windscreens, repairs nets, fills cracks, and repairs and paints courts as needed.
• Conducts athletic field inspections and documentation involving decisions on the removal, renovation, repair or new design of all athletic fields and play courts.
• Maintains and inspects all District fencing, including split rail and chain link.
• May assist with supervising assigned part-time/seasonal employees including orientation, training in equipment use, reviewing work, and overseeing quality. In addition, this position is occasionally responsible for supervising volunteers and community service workers.
• Assists in the application of pesticides and herbicides and weed removal as required in designated areas..
• Exercises good judgment and proper safety precautions and practices at all times.
• Keeps accurate timecard records, daily activity reports, and other reports and records as required.
• Assists with District related special events by making deliveries of materials and supplies necessary to meet the requests of facility rentals and work orders. Sets up and disassembles event tents, tables, picnic benches and chairs.
• Develops and maintains professional relationships with District employees, vendors, various outside users’ groups and associations.
• May be required to fill in for absent employees, covering some or all duties to ensure operations continue smoothly.
• Responds tactfully, respectfully and in a timely manner to inquiries and problems in person, through email, phone, and mail by providing helpful information and explanations in line with District policies and procedures. Thoughtfully handles confrontational or stressful interactions.
• Participates in the cleaning and maintenance of the facility as needed.
• Attends and participates in trainings, orientations, and staff meetings on project progress, safety, park maintenance practices, procedural changes and other topics related to the operations of the District.
• Attends work on a regular, reliable, and punctual basis.
• May be required to work weekends, evenings, holidays, and be on snow watch as well as work shifts deviating from this position’s normal workdays and/or with other work groups.
• Complies with District and Departmental vision, mission, rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
• Maintains, operates, and cares for assigned tools and equipment. Performs preventive maintenance or minor repairs on equipment and notifies appropriate personnel of needed tool, equipment or vehicle maintenance service or repairs.
• Performs snow and ice removal using plow trucks, blowers, spreaders, shovels, ice scrapers, de-icing salts or sand, etc.

Education and/or Experience:

• Must be eighteen (18) years of age with a high school diploma or its equivalent.

Licenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements:

• Must possess a valid Colorado Driver License or the ability to obtain upon hire and maintain an acceptable driving record.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Working knowledge of or the ability to learn maintenance procedures, operations, and safety standards for athletic fields and play courts.
• Ability to operate or receive training on various types of maintenance and construction equipment.
• Ability to work in and promote a team environment.
• Working knowledge of equipment, materials, techniques and supplies used in the maintenance of athletic fields.
• Knowledge in the safe and proper operation of snowplows and snow blowers.
• Ability to train employees, community service workers, and volunteers.

• Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications including Outlook and Word.

Material and Equipment Used:

• Regularly uses assorted power tools; various mowing equipment; light duty trucks and trailers; front-end loaders, tractors and implements (box scraper, trencher, mower, etc.); snow blower; and snowplow truck.
• Also regularly uses hand tools including, but not limit to, shovel, rakes, screw drivers, hammers, and wheel barrows; electrical power tools including, but not limit to, drills, circular saws, and jig saws; motorized power tools including, but not limited to, weed trimmer, backpack blower, rototiller, walk-behind mower, snowblower, and chainsaws; pesticide application equipment including high or low pressure sprayers and backpack sprayers, pesticides, fertilizers; and de-icing salt.
• Uses standard office equipment including a personal computer, phone, printer, and copier.
• This position may be required to drive a personal and/or District motor vehicle to various District and off-site facilities for business purposes.
• Regularly requires strenuous work outdoors with exposure to a variety of weather conditions, ecosystems, and landscapes.
• This position has regular exposure to adverse conditions such as tight working quarters, dust, molds, grasses, fumes, odors, wildlife and insects such as bees and wasps, pesticides and other chemicals, extreme temperatures, loud noises, ultra-violet radiation, humidity and precipitation, and may include unlit or low light situations.
• This position also performs work indoors and in an office environment subject to interruptions and background noises.

Physical Requirements:

• Extended periods spent performing strenuous manual labor and standing, walking, sitting.
• Physical work lifting up to 50 pounds.
• Required to use hands and fingers to manually manipulate, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.
• Frequently required to bend and reach. May occasionally crawl, squat, kneel, climb stairs and ladders and work in uncomfortable positions for short periods of time.
• Frequent hand/eye coordination to operate tools, machinery, personal computer and equipment.
• Foot/eye coordination required for operating motorized equipment.
