Job summary

South Suburban Park & Recreation District is seeking an ice arena maintenance worker to preserve ice quality and facility conditions. The role includes resurfacing, operating the ice resurfacer, and daily inspection of cooling systems to keep events on schedule.

The ideal candidate has basic maintenance experience, strong safety awareness, and the ability to work varied hours including evenings, weekends, and some holidays. Training provided for district procedures.

Qualifications

• Must be eighteen (18) years of age with a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Six (6) months of experience working in facility ice operations and/or maintenance. One (1) year preferred.
• Any combination of experience, training and education that demonstrates the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.

Job description

Hiring Range is $42,065 - $49,708 annually based on qualifications, education and experience as it relates to the position.

Position Summary

Under the close supervision of the Facility Maintenance Lead - Ice,this position is responsible for providing/maintaining quality iceconditions and maintenance of the ice rink surfaces and surroundingfacilities (Zamboni garages, walkways, glass, boards, etc.) whilekeeping events on time according to the ice events schedule. Thisposition also has opening and/or closing responsibilities. Performsduties in a manner consistent with the stated values of the organization.

• Responsible for ice maintenance including resurfacing, edging,flooding, filling holes, chipping ice along dasher boards, andmaintaining proper ice thickness as required by usage.
• Operates mechanical equipment including but not limited to iceresurfacer, ice edger, etc.
• Monitors ice chiller system including filling logs, adding oil tocompressors, adding brine when needed, testing brine solutionlevels, and evaluating ice plant.
• Maintains ice resurfacing machines including appearance, changingblades, greasing parts, battery upkeep, and changing oil (edger).
• Responsible for cleaning up and changing broken glass. Maintainsand repairs hockey nets.
• Maintains and repairs dasher system and glass.
• Responsible for identifying and performing routine andpreventative maintenance needs through inspecting and proceeding toclean, lubricate, tighten, adjust, and replace worn or damaged partsof equipment.
• Cleans rink boards, glass and players benches as needed.
• Performs ice arena upkeep including cleaning locker rooms,bathrooms, players benches, and flooring, taking out trash, andresurfacing garages.
• May provide direction to part-time staff, contractors and/orvolunteers as assigned.
• Ensures security of facility during all shifts by followingopening and closing security procedures.
• Responsible for performing ice cuts on time and when scheduled inorder to keep ice events on schedule.
• Provides backup support as needed to cover for absent employeesand to ensure operations continue smoothly.
• Informs supervisor of identified specialized maintenance needs.
• Responds tactfully, respectfully and in a timely manner toinquiries, concerns and problems in person, through email, phone andmail by providing helpful information and explanations in-line withDistrict policies and procedures. Thoughtfully handlesconfrontational or stressful interactions.
• Develops and maintains professional relationships with Districtemployees, vendors, and various outside user groups and associations.
• Attends work on a regular, reliable and punctual basis.
• Must work varied hours that may include evenings, weekends, andsome holidays.
• Monitors, reads, and records ice floor and ice surfacetemperature, air temperature, humidity levels, compressors and otherice plant performance metrics and service records.
• Observes necessary precautions to assure general public safety;inspects ice conditions for safety and maintenance needs.
• Recognizes emergency and dangerous situations by reacting quicklyand calmly; administers first aid as needed. CompletesAccident/Incident report.
• Attends and participates in staff meetings, trainings, and orientations.

Education and/or Experience

• Must be eighteen (18) years of age with a high school diploma or equivalent.

Licenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements

• CPR, AED and First Aid certifications or the ability to obtainupon hire.
• Mandatory Reporting certification, or the ability to obtain within30 days.
• A valid Colorado Driver License or the ability to obtain uponhireand maintain an acceptable driving record preferred.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Working knowledge of the techniques and equipment involved incustodial maintenance, preventative maintenance and the operationsof an ice rink. Equipment includes but is not limited to theZamboni machines, ice edger, ice compressors, cooling towers andboiler units.
• Must have strong written and oral communication skills tounderstand and execute oral and written instructions.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software including Excel,Word, and Outlook.
• Must be highly motivated and take direction well.
• Ability to work independently and with a team in a fast-paced andhigh-volume environment with emphasis on accuracy and timeliness.
• Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to provideoutstanding customer service, establish and maintain effectiveworking relationships, and interact with others in a professional manner.
• Ability to work a varied schedule which may include some evenings,weekends, and holidays.
• Must exercise accepted safety precautions while operating all equipment.

Material and Equipment Used

• Regularly uses Zamboni, ice chipper, power washer, and edger.
• Uses standard office equipment including a personal computer,phone, printer, and copier.
• This position may be required to drive a personal and/or Districtmotor vehicle to various District and off-site facilities forbusiness purposes.
• The employee is exposed to wet, cold and slippery conditions.
• This position works in a cool environment; the temperature at theice rink(s) will vary from 40-55 degrees Fahrenheit.
• Also performs work in an office environment subject tointerruptions and background noise.

Physical Requirements

• Frequent bending, standing, skating, walking, kneeling, stooping,reaching and lifting in performance of duties.
• Occasional work lifting up to 50 pounds.
• Regularly required to use hands and fingers to handle or feelobjects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms.
• Frequent hand/eye coordination to operate equipment, personalcomputer, and office equipment.
• Vision for reading, recording and interpreting information. Visionacuity to see close-up and at a distance with the ability to adjustfocus allowing a broad field of vision. Vision requirements alsoinclude depth perception and color vision.
• Speech communication and hearing to maintain clear and effectivecommunication via the telephone and through face-to-facecommunication. Must understand and be understood.
