Job summary

Illinois Ag is seeking a Maintenance Technician for its Downers Grove, IL facility. You will troubleshoot, repair, and maintain plant equipment to keep production safe, efficient, and compliant with safety and quality standards.

The role requires hands-on mechanical and electrical skills, experience with boilers/HVAC/refrigeration, and the ability to read manuals and schematics. Overtime and weekend work may be required.

  • Ability to work overtime when needed and lift up to 50 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and repair plant production equipment using manuals and guidance.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and control system issues.
  • Perform preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on plant machinery.
  • Maintain boilers, HVAC, refrigeration, and building systems.
  • Use hand/power tools and shop equipment safely.
  • Take measurements, run diagnostics, and interpret ladder logic for troubleshooting.
  • Operate testing equipment to diagnose components and perform replacements.
  • Document daily maintenance and update work orders.
  • Communicate with maintenance and operations teams to support plant operations.
  • Adhere to safety, HACCP, GMP, SQF, and other regulatory requirements.

Location: Downers Grove, Illinois

Pay Rate: $36.00/hour

Shift: 3rd Shift (Generally starts as early as 9:45 PM until finish. Overtime and weekend work as needed. Start times and hours may vary based on production schedules, holidays, and staffing needs.)

Requirement: Strong attendance and punctuality are essential. Employees must remain in position for a minimum of one year and successfully complete a 90-day evaluation period.

HOW YOU WILL MAKE HISTORY HERE

As a Maintenance Technician, you will play a critical role in keeping our facility operating safely, efficiently, and reliably. You will support production by troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining plant equipment and building systems while ensuring compliance with all safety, food quality, and operational standards. Your technical expertise will help minimize downtime, improve equipment performance, and support a high-performing manufacturing environment.

WHAT YOU WILL DO
  • Maintain and repair plant production equipment using shop manuals, schematic drawings, and guidance from supervisors and team members.
  • Troubleshoot and repair mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and basic control system issues.
  • Perform preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on plant machinery and facility systems.
  • Maintain boilers, hot water systems, HVAC equipment, refrigeration systems, chillers, fire protection systems, and building infrastructure.
  • Utilize hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment such as welders, lathes, grinders, and mills safely and effectively.
  • Perform precise measurements, testing, and diagnostics to identify equipment issues.
  • Interpret ladder logic and basic control circuits to support troubleshooting activities.
  • Use electrical testing equipment, including multimeters, to diagnose and replace like-for-like electrical components.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision while effectively prioritizing maintenance tasks.
  • Complete daily maintenance documentation and work order reporting.
  • Utilize Microsoft Office, SAP, email, and other systems to document work and communicate maintenance activities.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and cross-functional partners to support plant operations.
  • Follow all company policies and programs, including Safety, HACCP, GMP, SQF, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Safely operate in elevated work environments using ladders, scissor lifts, and WAV lifts.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives and participate in ongoing technical training and development.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TABLE (MUST HAVE)
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Basic electrical training or equivalent experience that enables safe electrical troubleshooting.
  • Experience troubleshooting and repairing mechanical equipment.
  • Knowledge and experience using basic hand and power tools safely.
  • Mechanical aptitude, manual dexterity, and strong troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret equipment manuals, schematics, diagrams, and technical documentation.
  • Ability to interpret ladder logic and basic control circuits.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office, SAP, and email systems.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations using whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and both metric and standard measurements.
  • Ability to work independently and solve problems involving multiple variables.
  • Commitment to safety, quality standards, and operational excellence.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and perform physically demanding work, including lifting up to 50 pounds and pushing/pulling up to 1,500 pounds.
  • Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with exposure to moving machinery, electrical hazards, temperature extremes, noise, dust, and varying environmental conditions.
  • Ability to work overtime as needed to support operational requirements.
  • Ability to successfully complete required aptitude testing and Powered Industrial Equipment licensing requirements.
IT WOULD BE GREAT IF YOU HAVE (NICE TO HAVE)
  • Two or more years of experience troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining manufacturing or production equipment.
  • Experience maintaining boilers, HVAC systems, refrigeration systems, chillers, or facility infrastructure.
  • Welding, machining, or fabrication experience.
  • Experience working with PLCs, controls, and automated manufacturing equipment.
  • Forklift Operator Certification.
  • Experience in a food manufacturing environment.
  • Knowledge of HACCP, GMP, SQF, and food safety programs.
  • Experience working with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) or SAP maintenance modules.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning, professional development, and knowledge sharing.

Individual base pay depends on work location and additional factors such as experience, job-related skills, and relevant education or training. Total pay may include other forms of compensation.
