Job Summary

The Maintenance Technician career path is structured to support skill development, equipment knowledge, and increasing levels of responsibility. Each tier builds on the previous level, with expanded technical expertise, independence, and leadership expectations.

Maintenance Technician I – Entry Level

Responsibilities:

  • Basic mechanical understanding
  • Follows safety protocols and procedures.
  • Can read manuals and simple schematics
  • Able to use hand and power tools safely.
  • Entry level trouble shooting, still requiring direction.
  • Can complete typical maintenance tasks including but not limited to:
  • Check fluid levels and lube machinery.
  • Replace belts, bearings, and hardware.
  • Inspect and clean all machines
  • Assist higher level tech during repairs.
  • Can understand and complete preventive maintenance procedures.
  • Ability to keep work area clean and organized.
  • Ability to stay on task without supervision.

Experience: 0-2 years in maintenance or equivalent education

Maintenance Technician II – Skilled Level

Responsibilities:

  • Must meet all level 1 requirements.
  • Must possess strong mechanical abilities and troubleshooting skills.
  • Must understand some common electrical systems.
  • Can work independently to perform common mechanical maintenance.
  • Can perform root cause analysis on recurring equipment failures.
  • Can use CMMS software for work orders and data logging.
  • Replace motors, gearboxes, hubs, and sensors.
  • Perform lockout-tagout procedures.
  • Perform Forklift checks and maintenance procedures.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical issues.
  • Some grounds maintenance as needed or assigned.
  • Daily preventive maintenance

Experience: 2-5 years in maintenance role.

Maintenance Technician III – Advanced Level

Responsibilities:

  • Must meet all level 1 requirements
  • Must meet all level 2 requirements.
  • Expertise in mechanical and/or electrical systems.
  • Proficient reading blueprints and/or wiring schematics
  • Proficient troubleshooting both mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Some knowledge of hydraulic and automation systems.
  • Knowledge of HVAC systems, Plumbing, and Electrical wiring a plus.
  • Show good decision-making skills without supervision.
  • Coordinate with equipment manufacturers/ parts suppliers during troubleshooting process.
  • Research and order parts for repairs and projects with a focus on cost savings.
  • Work with and train lower level techs during repair process.

Experience: 5+ years

Maintenance Technician – Lead Position

Responsibilities:

  • Must meet all level 1 requirements
  • Must meet all level 2 requirements
  • Must meet all level 3 requirements
  • Able to lead small team of maintenance techs on daily duties and assignments.
  • Must possess good time management skills
  • Assisting in planning and execution of installations and capital projects
  • Act as point of contact for escalated technical issues and emergency repairs.
  • Delegate job duties and assignments daily.
  • Create preventive maintenance programs for new and existing equipment.
  • Coordinate with Management, Sales, and Engineering about equipment failures, issues, and repairs when necessary.
  • Recommend improvements for reliability, efficiency, and safety.
  • Ensure all maintenance work is performed with in compliance with safety regulation.
  • Exhibits strong potential for advancement into a leadership role within the company. Possesses at least 4 of the below skills and has the ability to be trained/coached in further leadership skills. Skill set includes:

Experience: 5+ years in a manufacturing maintenance role, 1-2 years in a lead position.

Ideal Candidate would have the following skills
Electronics Troubleshooting
  • Diagnose failed electronic components and printed circuit boards (PCBs).
  • Troubleshoot DC power supplies and low-voltage control circuits (12VDC–48VDC).
  • Test and replace sensors, proximity switches, photoelectric sensors, limit switches, and encoders.
  • Understand analog and digital input/output devices.
  • Read electronic wiring diagrams and component layouts.
  • Troubleshoot communication between machine components.
Mechanical Troubleshooting
  • Diagnose machine failures using systematic troubleshooting techniques.
  • Replace bearings, gearboxes, chains, sprockets, belts, pulleys, and couplings.
  • Perform shaft alignment and precision measurements.
  • Troubleshoot conveyors and automated machinery.
  • Identify root causes of recurring mechanical failures.
Hydraulics & Pneumatics
  • Diagnose hydraulic system failures.
  • Troubleshoot valves, pumps, cylinders, and pressure issues.
  • Troubleshoot pneumatic valves, regulators, FRLs, cylinders, and air leaks.
  • Read hydraulic and pneumatic schematics.
Machine Diagnostics
  • Analyze machine faults using logical troubleshooting methods.
  • Isolate failures between electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and software systems.
  • Use manufacturer manuals and diagnostic software.
  • Minimize equipment downtime through efficient troubleshooting.
  • Perform root cause analysis and recommend permanent corrective actions.
Fabrication & Repair
  • Perform MIG welding for equipment repair.
  • Operate drill press, grinder, bandsaw, and fabrication tools.
  • Fabricate or modify machine brackets and guards.
  • Basic machining experience preferred.
Computer Skills
  • Enter work orders and maintenance records into a CMMS.
  • Use Microsoft Office.
  • Read electronic manuals and machine documentation.
  • Download and interpret equipment diagnostics.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Industrial Maintenance Technology, Mechatronics, Electronics Technology, or a related field; or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of industrial maintenance experience.
  • Preferred: Experience troubleshooting PLC-controlled equipment (Allen-Bradley preferred).
  • Preferred: Experience with servo systems, robotics, or CNC equipment.
  • Preferred: Experience with RF welding equipment or other high-frequency industrial machinery (preferred).
