Job summary

McLennan Community College is seeking a Maintenance Technician to perform skilled maintenance, troubleshooting, preventive work, and repairs on campus facilities, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and building systems. You will respond to requests, operate tools, and support safe, functional college facilities.

The role reports to the Maintenance Manager. A High School Diploma or GED is required, with background checks for security clearance.

Qualifications

  • Report to Maintenance Manager and maintain records of work performed.

Responsibilities

Performs skilled maintenance, troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and repair of campus facilities, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, building systems, sidewalks, and other campus infrastructure and equipment, to ensure a safe, functional, and well-maintained learning environment. Responds to maintenance requests, operates and maintains tools and equipment, and completes assigned repairs and maintenance activities to support the efficient operation of College facilities. This position reports to the Maintenance Manager and exercises no supervision.

NOTE: This is a security sensitive position and an appropriate background investigation will be made on applicants being strongly considered for this position.

Selection Criteria
Knowledge of
  • Building maintenance principles, methods, materials, and equipment used in the installation, maintenance, and repair of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and related building systems.
  • Applicable building, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and safety codes, regulations, and industry standards.
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE), safe work practices, and occupational safety procedures.
  • Preventive maintenance practices, computerized work order systems, and basic building automation systems.
Skills in
  • Troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing HVAC systems, controls, and mechanical equipment.
  • Diagnosing and repairing electrical, plumbing, and building systems, including electrical distribution circuits.
  • Performing preventive maintenance to maximize equipment reliability and extend the life of campus facilities and equipment.
  • Using computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and other technology to document work and manage maintenance activities.
Ability to
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, diagrams, technical manuals, and construction drawings.
  • Safely operate specialized maintenance equipment, including forklifts, personal lifts, welders, torches, sewer machines, and similar equipment.
  • Diagnose maintenance problems, determine appropriate corrective actions, and complete repairs efficiently.
  • Work independently, prioritize assignments, and manage multiple maintenance requests with minimal supervision.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions, policies, and procedures.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships and communicate professionally with students, faculty, staff, vendors, and the public.
  • Provide caring, high-quality service by creating welcoming experiences, communicating clearly and proactively, addressing needs with professionalism and empathy, and ensuring individuals are thoughtfully connected to appropriate resources.
Working Conditions

Exertive-Significant exertion on a daily basis. Awkward positions and sustained activities require strength. Frequent moderate lifting is required. Continual Exposure for Recurring Risk-At least half of each week requires exposure to sensory extremes. Several times weekly there may be exposure to chance of injury or loss of life, requiring additional safety precautions.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Education: High School Diploma or GED

Experience: More than one year of work experience

Special Requirement: Must have and maintain a valid driver's license; Must be insurable and maintain insurability under the College's automobile insurance policy.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience: Work experience in a utilities and/or general building maintenance/construction environment

Certifications: Preference will be given to those with obtained license/certifications in any of the following areas: HVAC, electrical, plumbing, or building construction.
