Job summary

McHenry County College seeks a skilled Facilities Technician to maintain HVAC, plumbing, carpentry and electrical systems on a 40-hour week. The role requires flexibility for evenings and weekends to meet department needs.

  • Coordinate inspections, manage records, and ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Lead small projects, obtain vendor quotes, and schedule timelines.
  • Respond to maintenance emergencies and support BAS controls when needed.

40 Hours I Flexible schedule to meet department needs to include days, evenings, and weekends. Typical schedule 7am - 3:30pm Monday - Friday

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities
  • Perform a wide range of general and skilled maintenance and repair tasks, including plumbing, carpentry, HVAC systems, kitchen equipment, and other building systems.
  • Conduct routine inspections, evaluations, and preventative maintenance to ensure compliance with applicable life safety codes and the efficient operation of facilities and equipment.
  • Coordinate schedule, and track required building inspections. Including fire extinguishers, elevators, sprinkler systems, FM200, smoke alarms and strobes, ANSUL systems, etc.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for external vendors, coordinating inspections, maintenance services, and project work.
  • Maintain accurate records and ensure timely submission and posting of all documentation required for regulatory and compliance purposes.
  • Assists with Building Automation System (BAS) temperature controls in the absence of the HVAC specialist.
  • Lead assigned construction and facilities improvement projects under the direction of the Director of Capital Projects and Improvements, including developing scopes of work, obtaining vendor quotes, and coordinating project timelines.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with staff, vendors, and stakeholders.
  • Prepares and maintains written documentation (e.g., work orders, repair updates, reports) to track activities and communicate information.
  • Participate in meetings, training sessions, and professional development activities as required.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a safe and organized condition.
  • Collaborate with supervisors and team members to ensure timely and efficient completion of work orders and projects.
  • Respond to maintenance emergencies during and outside of standard working hours, as required.
  • Assist with snow removal and basic landscaping duties, as needed.
  • Works collaboratively with internal teams and external partners to support departmental goals.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
  • High School graduate or equivalent plus additional specialized training
  • 3+ years HVAC or Plumbing Experience
  • Valid state driver’s license
  • EPA Universal Certification
Desired Qualifications
  • IL plumbing license
Skills and Specifications
  • Well-developed knowledge of maintenance systems, HVAC, plumbing, and electrical trades, preferably in the environment of large building maintenance
  • Strong mechanical aptitude
  • Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job to include, but not limited to: operating equipment and tools used in skilled trades, computer systems and software literacy (e-mail, work order and building automation systems, etc.)
  • Ability to learn technical applications
  • Ability to grow with technology and best practices implemented by the College
  • Ability to adhere to safety practices (e.g. OSHA Standards, proper handling of hazardous materials, proper use of personal protective equipment, proper lifting techniques, and proper use of ladders and lifts, etc.)
  • Able to complete projects under the direction of the supervisor.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and/or present information to others; and understand written and verbal instructions
  • Be able to perform basic math functions
  • Ability to read assembly instructions in various formats
  • Ability to work within a scheduled timeframe to complete projects and assignments
  • Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances
  • Work with data utilizing specific defined processes and operate equipment using industry standard methods
  • Ability to work safely with heights up to 30 feet, ability to move and safely lift 75 lbs. unassisted, and work out of doors in inclement weather
  • Ability to perform physical activities, such as, but not limited to bending, standing, climbing or walking
  • Operate manual and power equipment using industry standard methods of safety
  • Must demonstrate behavior that shows they are responsible, trustworthy, thorough, and committed
  • Well-developed organizational skills, allowing them to be self-directed, and self-motivated
