Job summary

The City of St. Joseph is hiring a Maintenance Technician (General) in the Parks, Recreation & Civic Facilities division to perform complex maintenance on park amenities, grounds, and facilities, including playground equipment inspection and upkeep, with occasional supervisory duties.

Responsibilities include inspecting, maintaining, and repairing playground equipment; painting surfaces; operating mowers, trucks, tractors, chainsaws, forklift, bobcat, boom truck; installing new equipment; and

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • One or more years of park maintenance experience preferred.
  • Ability to obtain Certified Playground Safety Inspector certificate.
  • Valid Class A CDL required or must obtain within 90 days of employment.
  • Ability to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must pass drug screening and criminal background check.

Job Summary

Performs difficult general maintenance work on park amenities, grounds, and facilities as well as inspection and maintenance of playground facilities and equipment. May be assigned intermittent supervisory responsibilities involving small work crews.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Performs inspection, preventative maintenance, and repairs on playground equipment.
  • Prepare surfaces and paint park facilities and amenities.
  • Operates equipment such as mowers, trucks, tractors, chainsaws, forklift, bobcat, boom truck and other equipment used in the maintenance of parks.
  • Install new equipment and amenities.
  • Repair and renovate all existing amenities, facilities, and grounds.
  • Repair vandalism to park facilities and buildings.
  • Securers all park facilities and buildings as necessary.
  • Assist and work with other maintenance personnel as needed.
Other Duties And Responsibilities
  • Prepare material lists and order supplies for work projects.
  • Perform inspections of park facilities.
  • May be required to work with or supervise inmates.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Required (Essential) Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
  • Skills in planning, organizing, and directing crews, operation of trucks, tractors, mowers, chainsaws, forklift, bobcat, boom truck and other equipment used in park maintenance.
  • Knowledge of general park maintenance procedures.
  • Knowledge of department rules and regulations.
  • Ability to obtain Certified Playground Safety Inspector certificate issued by the National Playground Safety Institute.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, which will include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with subordinates and the general public.
  • Ability to follow oral and/or written instructions.
  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s license (CDL) required or must have ability to obtain within 90 days of employment.
  • Must attend a work release supervisor training class annually.
Material and Equipment Directly Used

Operates a variety of equipment used in routine maintenance, including mowers, trucks, tractors, chainsaws, forklift, bobcat, boom truck and other equipment used in the maintenance of parks. There may be times when use of personal vehicle may be required.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements

Majority of work is performed in an outdoor setting where weather conditions can vary from extreme heat and cold, with high levels of dust, dirt, fumes, and noise. Physical activity includes prolonged standing, bending, stooping, lifting, walking and uses arms and hands frequently. Must have the ability to lift objects weighing up to 50 to 75 pounds and assist in lifting objects weighing in excess of 100 pounds. Some overnight or day travel may be required for business purposes. Vacation and other leave scheduling shall be requested of and approved by the appropriate supervisor.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent required. One or more years of experience required to provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
