Northwest State Community College is seeking a Maintenance Technician to perform repairs and general maintenance of campus machinery, buildings and equipment, with some custodial duties. The role requires technical independence and reading work orders or sketches to determine methods.

Job description

Applications are being accepted for a Maintenance Technician at Northwest State Community College. The Maintenance Technician is responsible for tasks of various skill levels in the repair and maintenance of machinery, buildings and equipment, as well as some general custodial responsibility. The employee exercises technical independence in determining work methods and procedures and receives assignments orally or through written work orders which may be accompanied by sketches or diagrams.

Normal Weekly Hours: 40 for 12 months per year. Hours vary between 6 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. as scheduled by supervisor. Days/hours will vary due to operational situations.

Job Responsibilities
  1. Perform general building and maintenance activities as needed including painting, staining, carpentry, prep work, and maintenance of equipment and machinery.
  2. Perform snow removal, salting of walkways, shoveling and being prepared for off-hours work during cold weather events as required for the safety and continuity of campus needs.
  3. Assist with general landscaping and grounds maintenance including mowing and spraying lawns, weeding, as well as removing and planting shrubs/trees. Keep building grounds litter free and removal of debris and emptying trash receptacles as needed.
  4. Operate all computerized building automation and HVAC equipment including performing daily HVAC Automation checks.
  5. Open building and verify proper operation of systems daily.
  6. Utilize computerized maintenance management system daily to ensure timely completion of work orders.
  7. Perform mechanical, electrical and plumbing duties for building and equipment as needed.
  8. Maintain fleet of campus vehicles including routine maintenance scheduling, cleaning, fueling, and identifying repair requirements.
  9. Verify and keep records of incoming shipments and prepare for delivery. Compares identifying information and counts to ensure the accuracy of orders received and shipped. Unpack, examine and delivers items to all departments when received and records any damage or discrepancies.
  10. Assist with office moves and set‑ups and tear‑downs for college events as needed.
  11. Assist with campus‑wide Recycling Program and promote Reuse and Reduce on campus.
  12. Assist with off‑site duties as required for the campus including banking request, mail pick‑up, minor facility pick‑ups and purchases and other tasks that require off‑site visits.
  13. Carry two‑way radio and respond to campus emergencies and assist as needed.
  14. Maintain adequate levels of campus operations and maintenance supplies.
  15. Create and maintain a safe and secure working environment by ensuring that all policies, procedures and regulations are being followed.
  16. Maintain outstanding customer service at all times.
  17. Other similar duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
  • High School graduate or GED.
  • A combination of two years training and/or experience in the electrical/mechanical/construction trades is required.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to operate all power equipment.
  • Must have strong troubleshooting and electrical skills.
  • Must have computerized building automation repair and diagnostic skills.
  • Ability to work in tight and close fit areas.
  • Ability to work at heights up to 25 feet with ladder and lifts.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
  • Must have forklift license.
