Classification Summary

This class is the second level in the Maintenance series. Incumbents are responsible for performing repairs and preventative maintenance. Responsibilities may include repairing, replacing, installing and revising various equipment; cleaning assigned area; performing snow removal duty; performing or assisting with event set-ups; checking inventory and making orders; attending meetings and organizing maintenance work; and being available outside of normal business hours to respond to emergencies including duties during inclement weather. Incumbents may need to assist Sr. Maintenance Technicians with maintenance duties for assigned systems and coordinate with outside vendors.

This position primarily supports our residential halls: Viking Woods.

Minimum Qualifications

High School diploma or equivalent (G.E.D) and two years’ experience in related maintenance area.

Preferred Qualifications

Specialized or technical training.

Classification Duties
  • Perform semi-skilled level repairs, services, and preventative maintenance of systems and equipment in assigned specialty areas. Comply with all College and relevant governmental safety guidelines. (B2)
  • Perform daily assessments and provide advice in areas of expertise. (B2)
  • Monitor and maintain work order and preventive maintenance program. (B2)
  • Develop and maintain rapport with outside vendors, suppliers, and contractors and serve as liaison to department management. (B2)
  • Monitor work performed by contractors.(B2)
  • Serve as mentor to the Maintenance Associates. (B2)
  • Research, consult with department management, and order equipment, parts, tools, and supplies when or as needed. (B2)
  • Provide support to higher-level maintenance staff as needed. (A1)
  • Perform required inclement weather duties as directed during regular or unscheduled shift days/hours to assure safety of campus navigation for all pedestrians and motorists including but not limited to, plowing snow, sleet, ice and chemical application to parking lots and sidewalks, entrances, etc. (A1)
  • Perform other related duties of a comparable level/type as assigned.
Position Duties
  • Perform basic electrical work: installs and repairs electrical wiring, systems, and lighting fixtures in buildings. Installs conduits and pipes to house electrical wires and cables. Ensures piping complies with electrical codes. Installs circuit breakers and other electrical hardware and connects wiring to them.
  • Perform basic plumbing: installs pipes and plumbing fixtures; visually inspect equipment and operate test equipment such as pressure and vacuum gauges to determine the cause and location of trouble shoot; clear obstructions from sink drains and toilets; troubleshoot problems and decide how to fix them; repair pipes and plumbing fixtures; estimate costs of installations and repairs; present recommendations and related pricing to department director; must be capable of performing these tasks to ensure the proper functioning of the college plumbing systems.
  • Perform light carpentry work and drywall repairs.
