Job summary

Penobscot Bay YMCA is seeking a Maintenance Technician to join our facilities team in Maine. You will work with the Facilities Director to keep our spaces safe, clean, and welcoming, handling preventative maintenance, repairs, and vendor coordination across multiple sites in Rockport and Rockland.

The ideal candidate brings hands-on maintenance skills, strong judgment, and a calm, service-driven approach. This role also supports aquatic operations and custodial teams, with on-call availability

Qualifications

• Experience leading a facilities or maintenance team.
• Strong safety mindset and ability to manage multiple tasks.
• Ability to read procedures and use basic maintenance manuals.
• Willingness to be on call for emergency needs when PTO is used.

Responsibilities

• Support day-to-day operations, maintenance, and safety of all YMCA facilities, grounds, and vehicles.
• Back up custodial staff to keep spaces clean and welcoming.
• Perform general maintenance and repairs with basic carpentry, painting, or mechanical work.
• Assist with aquatic facilities and pool operations for safe, reliable functions.
• Coordinate with vendors for inspections and regulatory compliance.
• Complete seasonal maintenance like snow removal and outside grounds care.
• Assist with room setups for programs and events.
• Operate equipment such as scrubbers, mowers, and hedge trimmers as needed.
• Monitor safety and report hazards to the Director of Facilities.
• Fulfill other duties to support YMCA operations.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Maintenance Technician supports the day-to-day operations of the Penobscot Bay YMCA by helping keep our facilities safe, clean, functional, and welcoming. Supporting the Director of Facilities, this role helps complete daily projects, respond to maintenance needs, and step in as needed to ensure smooth operations across all YMCA sites in Rockport and Rockland. Responsibilities include preventative maintenance, repairs, and facility improvements, as well as hands‑on support for the custodial team to maintain clean and safe spaces. The Maintenance Technician may assist with carpentry, painting, floor care, equipment/vehicle upkeep, and small repairs, and will also support pool operations to ensure safety and functionality. This role is essential to the YMCA’s mission, directly supporting programs for youth, families, and adults by maintaining the spaces our community depends on every day.

Requirements

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Support the day-to‑day operations, maintenance, and safety of all YMCA facilities, grounds and vehicles, in support of the Director of Facilities.
2. Support custodial staff to ensure facilities are clean, safe, well‑maintained, and welcoming.
3. Perform general maintenance, repairs, and improvement projects and work orders in a safe, professional and efficient manner, including light carpentry, painting, basic mechanical work, and emergency repairs.
4. Provide routine support for aquatic facilities, including assisting with pool maintenance tasks, monitoring facility conditions, and coordinating with the Facilities Director and Aquatics Director to ensure safe, reliable pool operations.
5. Assist with vendor coordination and site visits (e.g., fire safety, security, pest control), and support compliance with all local, state, and federal facility‑related regulations.
6. Complete seasonal maintenance activities, including snow removal, salting and sanding, lawn care, hedge trimming, and deep cleaning of facilities during annual shutdowns.
7. Assist with room setups and breakdowns for programs, events, and seasonal operations as needed.
8. Operate motorized and non‑motorized equipment as needed, including auto scrubbers, snow blowers, lawn mowers, hedge trimmers, and other tools.
9. Monitor facility and vehicle safety during assigned shifts; promptly report hazards, incidents, or repair needs to the Director of Facilities.
10. Perform other duties as assigned for the good of the Y.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Basic knowledge of plumbing, carpentry, painting, cleaning methods and other maintenance‑related areas.
2. Ability to read and interpret instructions, procedures, manuals, and other documents.
3. Basic computer skills to review and record maintenance work orders electronically, as well as basic understanding of Google Suite (gmail), Word and Excel.
4. CPR, First Aid, AED, Certified Pool Operator certifications required within 3 months of hire (training provided by the Y).
5. Ability to calmly and professionally respond to safety and emergency situations.
6. Willingness to be on call for emergency needs when the Facilities Director utilizes PTO.

• Ability to perform essential maintenance to facility or equipment which may involve, but not limited to the following activities: semi – reaching to full‑reach overhead; crouching; kneeling; shoveling; carrying, working in narrow and/or confining spaces: underground, overhead, and at ground level; twisting of the waist, shoulders, and legs; and lying on stomach and/or back.
