Job summary

Purdue University Northwest's Housing department is hiring a Maintenance Technician to perform semi-skilled building maintenance, respond to service requests, and support mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, electrical, and other trades.

The role includes preventative maintenance, safety responsibilities, and occasional overtime; travel to other PNW locations may be required. Benefits and a shift schedule are listed in the posting.

Overview of Maintenance Technician

Purdue University Northwest's Housing department is seeking aMaintenance Technician to join our fun and friendly staff! TheMaintenance Technician will have responsibilities that include;semi-skilled building maintenance work while completing servicerequests, working on minor projects, and when making repairs.Orders and picks up needed materials and supplies to perform work.Works, as required, and supports the following functions:mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, electrical, roofing grounds,and building services. Coordinates, documents, and performspreventative maintenance activities and informs immediatesupervisor of necessary additions/deletions to facilitiesdocumentation. Utilizes technology to complete work orders andcommunicate. Perform other related duties as requested by asupervisor. Practice and encouragement of a "Safety First" attitudeby using safe work practice when performing all duties andresponsibilities.

Service Maintenance Worker

Pay
  • up to $18.00/hour
Schedule
  • Typical work week for Day shift is Monday through Friday from7:00 AM – 3:30 PM or Tuesday – Saturday 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM.
  • Typical work week for afternoon shift is Monday - Thursday from3:00 PM - 11:30 PM.
  • On Fridays hours are 2:00 PM – 10:30 PM.
  • Typical work week for Housing maintenance is Monday – Friday8:00 AM – 4:30 PM.
  • However, periodic overtime may be required to meet the needs ofthe department, including participating on the Snow Removal Team.Must be able to travel to other PNW locations as needed.
Duties and Responsibilities of Maintenance Technician

General Maintenance

  • Responds to service calls when dispatched via radio, phone orwork order management system.
  • Repair and maintain plumbing systems
  • Install and repair wall and floor coverings, paintsurfaces
  • Service door systems, locks, door closers etc.
  • Inspect buildings, facilities and equipment when required.
  • Inspects work site to determine method of installation, tools,material and necessary equipment needed to complete jobassignments.
  • Plan work to ensure cost effect use of labor andmaterials.
  • Replaces ceiling tiles when applicable.
  • Assists other crafts when requested.
  • Encourages a "Safety First" attitude.
  • Performs basic functions such as replacing ballast, switches,outlets, fuses, etc. and disconnecting motors with regard toexperience and safety.
  • Required to respond to emergencies at hours other than normallyscheduled

Additional (temporary) work assignments as needed

  • Assists in maintaining and servicing University piping andsanitary facilities.
  • Assist in the snow removal operations dictated by departmentalworkloads and priorities, with regard to experience andsafety.
  • Assists in installing equipment.
  • When required by immediate supervisor, with regard toexperience and safety.

Preventative Maintenance

  • Conducts periodic inspections of University buildings andutilities systems. Reports the results of inspections to any or allof Facilities Services staff orally or in writing, whenapplicable.
  • Insures that planned preventive maintenance schedules andactivities are completed in accordance with OEM recommendations andindustry standards to insure prolonged life and usefulness ofoperating equipment and facilities and to minimize breakdowns orfailures of such equipment and facilities. Assist management inpreparing, developing and maintaining records, reports,recommendations, evaluations, etc., reflecting the conditions underwhich systems and equipment are operated to measure the efficiencyand economy of operations. Maintain and submit reports of allman-hours and materials utilized in performing maintenancefunctions for the University, when applicable.
  • Coordinate the activities of assigned function(s) with otherdepartments and university organizational units as necessary toinsure disruption of normal campus operations is minimized.
  • Perform other related duties as required or assigned, withrespect to ability and safety.
  • Assist management in monitoring and approving the activities ofcontract personnel and services in assigned area of responsibilityas required to assure that satisfactory and acceptable performancestandards, specifications, material and labor cost, work schedules,etc., are maintained.
  • Encourage all Safety and Accident Prevention procedures arefollowed.

Documentation

  • Perform data entry on Work order system to provide workhistory.
  • Provides feedback to improve PM system.
  • All problems that impact equipment that requires repair must bedocumented via e-mail to their immediate supervisor.

  • Personal learning: Division level, as required to maintainskill level, Keep current with training involving regulationrevisions and changes.

Education of Maintenance Technician
  • Requires a high school diploma/GED
Experience of Maintenance Technician
  • 2 years minimum experience
  • Verified experience in basic building repairs in aninstructional or commercial setting

  • Basic math to add subtract multiply and divide

  • Ability to navigate a database
  • Valid driver's license with good driving record (as determinedby WL Risk Management via Motor Vehicle Records check)
  • Majority of work includes walking and standing with very littlesitting
  • Climbing stairs and ladders up to 10ft high also included inwork day
  • Must be able to lift, push pull and carry up to 50lbsfrequently and up to 60lbs occassionally
  • May be subject to call back to the University for emergencypurposes
  • Must work overtime as needed.
