Responsibilities

  • Operate various vehicles and equipment for construction and maintenance of roadways, airfields, sewers, water, and storm-water lines.
  • Maintain proper traffic control at work sites to protect crew and the public.
  • Perform daily inventory checks on service trucks and obtain tools and equipment.
  • Transport materials and heavy equipment to work sites.
  • Inspect roads, bridges, and right-of-ways for safety and efficiency.
  • Perform minor repairs and preventative maintenance on tools and equipment.
  • Provide landscaping maintenance and erosion/drainage improvements.
  • Repair pipes and maintain roads, ditches, water mains, and fire hydrants.

Job Overview

Maintenance Technician vacancies in Roadway Operations and Maintenance Division. The primary goal of the Division is to maintain roads and right‑of‑ways in Gwinnett County to ensure safe driving conditions for the public works infrastructure.

Essential Duties
  • Operate various complex vehicles and equipment and perform associated labor duties in the construction and maintenance of public roadways, airfields, sewers, water, and/or storm‑water lines, or haul waste sludge to and from facilities.
  • Maintain proper traffic control at work sites to ensure safety for both the work crew and the motoring public.
  • Perform daily inventory checks on service trucks and obtain proper tools and equipment to perform job tasks.
  • Transport materials and heavy equipment to various work sites.
  • Inspect roads, airfields, bridges, and right‑of‑ways to ensure safe and efficient conditions.
  • Perform minor repairs and preventative maintenance on tools and equipment.
  • Cleans and repairs manholes as necessary to remove debris, obstacles, prevent infiltration, and installs and maintains sewer lines.
  • Provide landscaping maintenance, including grooming, clearing of branches, and maintaining grass, brush, shrubs, and flowers.
  • Improve erosion and drainage problems.
  • Repair pipes and maintain roads and ditches, airfields, water mains, and fire hydrants.
  • Perform other duties of a similar nature or level.
Additional Requirements
  • This job is a safety‑sensitive position that requires a pre‑employment drug test and subsequent random drug and alcohol testing.
  • This job may require on‑call rotation and emergency after‑hours, weekends, and/or holidays.
Grade and Salary

Grades: A123 and B213. Salary will be dependent on education and experience. Effective 4/11/2023, this position is eligible for the Employee Referral Program.

Maintenance Technician I Qualifications
  • Completion of coursework up through the eighth grade, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform essential duties.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Some positions require a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) which must be obtained within 12 months of employment; once obtained, DOT drug testing and subsequent random testing will be required.
Maintenance Technician II Qualifications
  • Completion of coursework up through the eighth grade.
  • One year of related maintenance experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform essential duties.
  • Road Flagging Certificate (must be completed within 60 days of hire).
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Some positions require a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) which must be obtained within 12 months of employment; once obtained, DOT drug testing and subsequent random testing will be required.
