Job summary

Smurfit Westrock is seeking a Maintenance Technician II to ensure reliability, safety, and performance of manufacturing equipment. You will perform preventive maintenance, troubleshoot, and repair production machinery while supporting both mechanical and electrical maintenance tasks.

You will read blueprints, document work, and assist in training junior technicians, contributing to plant productivity and safe operations.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED is required and relevant certifications are a plus.
  • 2+ years in industrial mechanical/electrical or maintenance roles.
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical and electrical troubleshooting and maintenance.
  • Ability to safely use hand and power tools and read technical docs.
  • Proficiency with Outlook, Word, Excel; willingness to work overtime.
  • Commitment to safety, quality, and housekeeping standards.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair mechanical and electrical equipment to minimize downtime and ensure safe operations.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and assist in improving equipment reliability and performance.
  • Inspect equipment and read blueprints to identify parts and calibration needs.
  • Support installation, modification, calibration, and repair of production equipment and material handling systems.
  • Maintain maintenance records and submit parts requests using company systems.
  • Assist in training Maintenance Technician I staff and promote safe work practices.
  • Promote safety culture and drive continuous improvement and OEE goals.

How You Will Make an Impact
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair mechanical and electrical equipment to minimize downtime and maintain safe operations.
  • Perform preventive maintenance activities and assist in identifying opportunities to improve equipment reliability and performance.
  • Inspect equipment, systems, and components to identify hazards, defects, and maintenance needs while ensuring compliance with safety standards.
  • Support installation, modification, calibration, and repair of production equipment, material handling systems, and related machinery.
  • Read and interpret mechanical drawings and blueprints to identify parts, diagnose issues, and execute repairs effectively.
  • Assist in training and mentoring Maintenance Technician I employees while promoting safe work practices and technical development.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, submit parts requests, and utilize computer systems to document work activities.
  • Promote a culture of safety, quality, teamwork, and continuous improvement while supporting operational goals and Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE).
What You Need to Succeed
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in industrial mechanical, electrical, or maintenance-related roles.
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical and electrical troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance practices.
  • Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, testing equipment, and maintenance-related machinery.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, mechanical drawings, maintenance manuals, and technical documentation.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Ability to work overtime and respond to maintenance emergencies when required.
  • Strong commitment to workplace safety, quality, and housekeeping standards.
  • Ability to lift, climb, bend, reach, and perform physical duties associated with industrial maintenance environments.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Technical, vocational, or industrial maintenance training in electrical, mechanical, industrial systems, or a related field.
  • Experience with welding, fabrication, machining, hydraulic systems, and industrial material handling equipment.
  • Experience operating aerial lifts, forklifts, and other maintenance support vehicles.
  • Knowledge of electronic calibration equipment, industrial controls, and instrumentation.
  • Experience leading, training, or mentoring maintenance team members.
  • Journeyman certification or ability to obtain applicable maintenance certifications.
  • Experience working in a manufacturing, packaging, paper, or industrial production environment.
