Job summary

The City of Portage’s Public Works Department seeks a dedicated Maintenance Tech I to support streets, parks and cemeteries from spring through fall. This role requires physical work outdoors, operating heavy equipment, and adherence to safety standards.

Starting pay is $22.89 per hour with benefits; overtime, early shifts, and seasonal leaf removal programs are included. CDL requirements are listed, and promotion opportunities exist under the UAW contract.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated work ethic.
• Experience in snow plowing, building trades, mowing, and road repairs preferred.
• Experience operating a dump truck with underbody blade helpful.
• Valid Michigan CDL with tanker endorsement and DOT medical card preferred.
• Valid Michigan CDL-B with air brakes; CDL-A to be obtained within 6 months.
• Ability to lift 50+ lbs and work in adverse weather.
• Must be 18+ with HS diploma or GED.

Responsibilities

• Perform manual construction and maintenance activities on City properties, streets, sewers, parks, and cemeteries (April–October).
• Operate heavy-duty trucks for leaf pickup and snow removal.
• Overtime required for leaf cleanup and winter street maintenance; early/late shifts as weather dictates.
• Opportunity for advancement under the UAW contract.

MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN Public Works

The City of Portage is looking for a dedicated and experienced Streets/Grounds Maintenance Technician to join our Public Works Department! If you are passionate about working outside, are results-oriented, and are a team player, this is your opportunity to make an impact.

What You'll Do:

• Manual construction and maintenance activities associated with the City of Portage properties, city streets, sewers, parks, and cemeteries from April to October.
• Operation of heavy-duty trucks for leaf pick-up and snow removal.
• Overtime is required for the City Leaf Clean-up program and Winter Street Maintenance with night/weekend shift requirements. Adjusted work schedule of 3:30 AM-12:00 PM or 12:00 PM-8:30 PM for winter street maintenance, with the potential of a midnight start time for the first shift or midnight end time for the second shift as weather dictates.
• Opportunities for advancement based on seniority and skill set under UAW Contract .

What We're Looking For:

• A demonstrated work ethic.
• Prior experience in snow plowing, building trades, mowing, and road repairs is preferred.
• Experience operating a dump truck with an underbody blade is helpful.
• Valid Michigan Class “A” CDL with tanker endorsement, and a DOT medical card preferred.
• Valid Michigan Class “B” CDL with air brakes required. CDL-A to be obtained in the first 6 months.
• Ability to lift objects and tools over 50 pounds and work under adverse weather conditions.
• Must be 18 years old and possess a high school diploma or general education degree (GED).
