Job summary

Greater Richmond Transit Company (GRTC) is seeking a Maintenance Supervisor for our Richmond, VA repair shop. The role focuses on ensuring mechanically sound, safely operating buses with timely repairs, both in-shop and on service calls.

Responsibilities include directing mechanics, prioritizing repairs, and coordinating parts; the ideal candidate has 3–5 years of diesel bus experience and strong leadership in a mass transit setting.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• 3–5 years of experience as a bus repair and overhaul mechanic, diesel equipment.
• Experience supervising mechanics or service staff, preferably in mass transit.

Responsibilities

• Train mechanics and schedule workloads; monitor performance.
• Provide technical guidance on repairs and part replacements.
• Decide on repairs and parts replacements as needed.
• Monitor workflow; identify delays and expedite as needed.
• Prepare repair part requisitions and supplies.
• Check and approve time records; prepare daily time sheets.
• Administer company and department policies; ensure tool safety.
• Ensure staff are trained in proper use of tools and equipment.

SUMMARY

Responsible for ensuring mechanically sound and safe motor vehicles are available in an economically timely manner, to include mechanical repairs to motor vehicles (predominately CNG-powered passenger buses, but includes some diesel and gasoline powered vehicles), both in a shop and during service calls to repair and/or recover vehicles.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Trains employees, schedules job assignments and monitors work.
• Provides technical assistance regarding repairs and replacement of parts and units.
• Make decisions on necessary repairs and replacement of parts.
• Monitors workflow, investigating reasons for delays (e.g. awaiting parts) and takes appropriate steps to expedite the process.
• Prepares requisitions for repair parts and supplies.
• Checks and approves time records.
• Prepares daily time sheets.
• Administers company and departmental policies.
• Checks for the serviceability of tools/equipment and ensures personnel are trained in the proper use.

OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED

In accordance with our mission statement, additional duties and / or tasks may be assigned to continue seamless service for the agency.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Directs staff of mechanics and assistant supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and/or Experience

• High school education and/or equivalent required.
• 3 to 5 years of experience as a bus repair and overhaul mechanic specializing in diesel equipment.
• Experience supervising mechanics and/or service employees, preferably in a mass transit setting.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

• Excellent oral and written communication skills required.
• Excellent interpersonal skills required.
• Ability to work with computerized maintenance software systems required.
