SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS
The Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the maintenance team and ensuring the safe, efficient, and continuous operation of all sawmill equipment and machinery. This role includes planning and coordinating preventive maintenance, responding to equipment breakdowns, supervising maintenance staff, and ensuring compliance with safety standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Supervise daily maintenance activities, ensuring all equipment is operating safely and efficiently.
- Lead, train, and mentor a team of maintenance technicians, millwrights, and electricians.
- Develop and implement preventive maintenance schedules for sawmill equipment including saws, conveyors, kilns, planers, debarkers, and other production machinery.
- Coordinate repairs and troubleshooting during equipment failures or unplanned downtime.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, reports, and inventory of parts and tools.
- Ensure compliance with workplace safety regulations and promote a culture of safety and accountability.
- Enforce Lockout/Tagout (OSHA 1910.147), hot work and fire watch, confined space, machine guarding, and mobile equipment procedures for maintenance employees and contractors.
- Keep equipment and work areas clear of dust accumulations, leaks, and debris to reduce fire and combustible dust hazards.
- Work closely with production management to minimize downtime and improve overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).
- Plan and schedule down-day and shutdown work with production and the Maintenance Manager, including parts, crews, and contractors.
- Manage maintenance budgets, vendors, and contractors when necessary.
- Recommend and implement improvements for mechanical systems and equipment reliability.
- Respond to emergency maintenance situations after hours as needed.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED required; technical certification or associate's degree in mechanical/electrical maintenance or a related field preferred.
- 5+ years of industrial maintenance experience, preferably in a sawmill or wood products manufacturing environment.
- 2+ years of supervisory or team lead experience.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems, including motor controls and PLCs.
- Ability to read technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics.
- Excellent organizational, leadership, and communication skills.
- Proficient with CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management Systems) and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Understanding of OSHA regulations and industrial safety practices.
Working Conditions:
- Work is performed in a sawmill environment with exposure to loud noise, dust, and machinery.
- Exposure to heat and cold, outdoor weather, heights, and mobile equipment; must wear required PPE.
- Requires standing, walking, climbing, and lifting (up to 50 lbs) on a regular basis.
- May involve shift work, weekends, or on-call availability.
