Job summary

The YMCA of the Cedar Rapids Metro Area is seeking a dependable custodian to maintain clean, safe, and welcoming branches and grounds. Responsibilities include sweeping, mopping, dusting, restrooms, window cleaning, and floor care across facilities, with flexibility to handle after-hours cleaning when required.

Candidates should have a high school diploma or GED and at least one year of custodial experience.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma, GED, or suitable equivalent.
• Minimum one year of related custodial experience.
• Ability to work with minimal supervision.
• Knowledge of cleaning agents and safety procedures.
• Willingness to work flexible hours including after-hours cleaning.

Responsibilities

• Maintain a high standard of cleanliness in assigned areas (sweep, mop, dust, vacuum, bathrooms, etc.).
• Clean and maintain floors, walls, windows, and other surfaces; perform floor care.
• Descales and sanitizes sinks, restrooms, and showers; restock supplies.
• Replace light bulbs and empty waste containers; manage recycling.
• Assist with snow removal and move furniture as needed.
• Adhere to YMCA policies and safety procedures; participate in staff trainings.

Job description

Overview

The custodian is responsible for keeping branches and grounds functionally and aesthetically pleasing. This position ensures the branches are tidy, clean and well-maintained.

Responsibilities

• Responsible for maintaining a high standard of cleanliness in assigned areas including sweep, mop, dust, vacuum, clean windows, refrigerator, bathrooms, shower, empty trash, locker rooms, and recycling
• Cleans and maintains floors, walls, windows, tiled areas, and other surfaces, including striping polish and waxing floors, and providing carpet care
• Cleans, descales and sanitizes sinks, toilets, showers, restrooms, and other assigned areas of building
• Refills all product dispensers such as soap, paper towels, toilet tissue etc
• Replaces light bulbs
• Empties waste containers and replaces soiled container liners
• Dusts furniture in office areas and meeting spaces, walls and ceilings
• Rearranges furniture as required
• Assist with snow removal as needed
• Participates in setups and takedowns and moves furniture and equipment as needed
• Assist or relieve personnel in other areas in emergency, staff shortage, or job vacancy
• Complete assigned responsibilities during facility shutdowns
• Must understand and perform skills established in the YUSA Maintenance Standards Manual
• Operates all equipment properly and promptly reports any problems to supervisor
• Reports any damage to supervisor
• Attends staff meetings and trainings as required
• Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and procedures, including emergency procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary
• Incorporates the mission, philosophy and 4 core values of the YMCA in all communication with participants and co-workers
• Perform routine maintenance as assigned, assist with maintenance jobs requiring more than one person
• Respond to member and staff service needs

Qualifications

• High School Diploma, GED, or suitable equivalent
• Minimum one year of related experience in custodial work
• Ability to work with minimal supervision
• Proficient with handling basic maintenance repairs
• Able to work a flexible work schedule including but not limited to afterhours cleaning of the facility
• Knowledge and ability to work with chemicals and equipment in the prescribed manner, including ability to read labels, SDS information, and instructions
• Prior knowledge or understanding of cleaning agents, appropriate commercial and/or industrial cleaning techniques
• Possesses mature judgment and sound decision-making
• Knowledge of safety issues related to facility site
• Ability to communicate effectively with members, peers, volunteers and supervisor
• Prior knowledge of methods of maintenance for carpet and hard surface floors and commercial chemical application is preferred

Posted Salary Range
