Job summary

Texas Health and Human Services is seeking a Maintenance Specialist III for the Plant Maintenance Department at the Big Spring State Hospital. Qualifications

  • Minimum two years of construction/maintenance experience with at least one trade plus six months in two additional trades.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect, adjust, maintain, and repair building systems and equipment to meet codes.
  • Operate hand and power tools following safety instructions.
  • Plan and execute repairs or upgrades including estimating materials and labor and ordering supplies.
  • Maintain records on work orders, projects, and materials requisitions.
  • Operate heavy machinery such as backhoes and forklifts as needed.
  • Provide training to colleagues on repair procedures and maintenance techniques.
  • Participate in disaster response or continuity-of-operations activities; may involve alternate shifts/locations.
  • Assist in operating company vehicle and making deliveries or pickups as required.
  • Perform other duties assigned by supervisor.

Overview

Maintenance Specialist III in the Plant Maintenance Department at the Big Spring State Hospital. The role involves complex building maintenance and construction tasks across multiple trades, including plumbing, HVAC, welding, carpentry, painting, and electrical work. Employees are expected to conduct inspections, perform repairs, maintain records, and support disaster response activities as required.

Key Responsibilities
  • Inspect, adjust, maintain, and repair building systems and equipment to ensure compliance with codes and standards.
  • Operate hand tools, power tools, and test equipment; follow safety and usage instructions.
  • Plan and execute repairs, renovations, or equipment upgrades, including identifying needed materials, estimating labor costs, and ordering supplies.
  • Maintain accurate records on work orders, projects, and material requisitions.
  • Operate heavy machinery such as backhoes and forklifts when necessary.
  • Provide training and guidance to colleagues on repair procedures and maintenance techniques.
  • Participate in disaster response or continuity‑of‑operations activities, which may involve alternate shifts or locations.
  • Assist in the operation of a company vehicle and make deliveries or pickup supplies as required.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor.
Essential Job Functions (EJFs)

  • Record and update work orders, project plans, and material requisitions.
  • Provide guidance to others during inspections and maintenance work.
  • Adhere to agency leave policies and may work overtime or evenings and weekends as needed.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Understanding of building maintenance, mechanical systems, electrical distribution, plumbing, and HVAC.
  • Proficiency with hand and power tools, test equipment, and safety/industrial regulations.
  • Ability to interpret drawings, schematics, or sketches.
  • Strong problem‑solving, decision‑making, and judgment skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication.
  • Capacity to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Capacity to operate heavy machinery such as forklifts or backhoes.
Required Qualifications
  • Vocational training or experience in one or more of the following trades: electrical, plumbing, masonry, mechanical equipment, locksmithing, painting, motor vehicle maintenance, groundskeeping, equipment maintenance, HVAC, carpentry, welding, or electronic cabling.
  • OR minimum two (2) years of experience in construction or maintenance with at least one trade plus six months in two additional trades.
  • Valid Texas driver’s license (or ability to obtain it within 90 days of hire).
  • Ability to drive a company vehicle when required.
Additional Requirements
  • Pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug test, and relevant registry checks.
  • Meet immunization requirements for hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, chicken pox, tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis, and influenza. Non‑vaccinated employees may need to wear a mask and take protective measures.
  • Must be at least 18 years old; applicants for certain centers must be 21.
