Job summary

The Town of Blacksburg is seeking a Seasonal Grounds Maintenance worker to perform landscape installations and care for municipal properties. The role includes operating landscape equipment and performing snow removal as needed.

Work shifts adapt to Fall and Spring schedules, with a standard daytime pattern Monday–Friday, and a starting annual pay range of $36,689 to $38,171. The position requires physical stamina and safe operation of equipment.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Prefer landscaping experience in municipal/commercial setting.
• VDACS-registered technician within six months of hire.

Responsibilities

• Landscape installations: trees, shrubs, perennials, bulbs, groundcovers, and annuals.
• Maintenance of landscapes and properties: planting, weeding, pruning, watering, fertilizing, mulching, addressing disease and pest issues.
• Right of Way maintenance: pruning for sight restrictions and clearance.
• Operate hand tools, small equipment, water truck, landscape equipment, pole saw, chainsaw.
• Operate dump trucks and snow removal equipment.

Job description

Shift:

Fall: October 1st - March 31st, Monday - Friday, 7:30 am - 4:00 pm

Spring: April 1st - September 30th, Monday - Friday, 6:30 am - 3:00 pm

Other hours as needed.

The set starting range for this position is $36,689.00 - $38,171.00 annually.

• Ability to care for annual beds and downtown hanging baskets
• Ability to operate a water truck
• Thorough knowledge of VDOT work zone requirements and the ability to safely work in and around the roadway
• Skill in the use of various hand tools and landscape equipment
• Ability to complete right-of-way maintenance tasks (pruning for sight restrictions, pruning for vehicular and pedestrian clearance)
• Ability to operate small equipment (snow blowers, ATV's, Ventrac, and other equipment) and shovel snow during sidewalk snow removal operations

Education and Experience

• High School Diploma or GED Certification Required
• Prefer: previous landscaping experience working in a municipal or commercial environment
• Possession of, or ability to get, a VDACS-registered technician within six months of hire

Special Requirements

• A valid Virginia Commercial Driver’s License – Class B with a tanker endorsement (or the ability to get one in 6 months of hire), and a satisfactory driving record are required
• This position is subject to pre-employment drug screening
