This job can be described as:

At Chesterton, we have a laser focus on our customers. The Maintenance Specialist I is an entry level position responsible for performing maintenance and conducting routine repairs, improvements and inspections for all equipment, support systems and the facility. The Maintenance Specialist I utilizes various equipment including but not limited to the following; machine shop equipment, hand tools, electrical testing, metal fabrication, carpentry and welding.

Job Model: On-Site

All fully remote positions will require you to travel on site 2-4 times per month depending upon business needs at your own expense.

Hybrid positions will require employees to work both on-site and remote each week under a schedule that has been determined and agreed upon by you and your manager.

On-Site positions will require employees to work on-site for each of their scheduled shifts.

A typical day at work would include:

  • Performs basic electrical, mechanical, metal fabrication, carpentry or associated work on plant facilities and machinery using hand and power tools as needed.
  • Performs routine, periodic, or special inspections to determine repair or maintenance work necessary to prevent breakdowns of facilities, machinery, and equipment by reporting directly to the supervisor.
  • Assists in testing, inspections, troubleshooting, and repairs industrial machinery.
  • Constructs office or other workspace areas as required. Maintains or improves all facility structure interior and exterior.
  • Performs other duties required for facility maintenance.
  • Assists licensed plumbers, electricians, etc. as needed.
  • Snow removal duties, general grounds keeping.
  • Enter recordings in computer CMM work order system.
  • This specific role/function is subject to our On-Call Policy and may be required to remain available during off-schedule hours to support the business needs.

Experience you need coming into this job:

  • 1-3 years experience in a manufacturing environment is preferred.
  • High School/Trade School or equivalence in experience.
  • Works under direct supervision from supervisor. Must be capable of working independently, and as a team.
  • Must be willing to work as part of a team and learn from senior level staff.
  • Ability to lift materials, equipment, and machinery manually up to 50 lbs., with mechanical assistance, 100 lbs.
  • Must be capable of operating a variety of hand tools and precision measuring instruments such as micrometers and venires.
  • Must possess general working knowledge of various maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to fulfill work projects by using moderate/complex judgment and logical thinking, while abiding by safety regulations.
  • Ability to work in an uncomfortable environment, etc., extreme heat/noise, cold, rain, snow, and exposure to unpleasant odors and chemicals.
  • Basic math, comprehension, and computer skills.
  • Ability to understand specifications, blueprints drawings, etc.
  • Ability to shift priorities and multitask.
  • Must possess the ability to perform continuous tasks of a highly physical nature. This position does not allow for physical restrictions. Manual dexterity, agility, mobility, and strength are critical to this position.
  • Must be able to lift, bend, crouch, kneel, climb, reach, etc. as needed.
  • Ability to obtain power industrial truck (forklift) operator license.

Employees assigned to certain tasks within this job may be required to participate in our Medical Surveillance Program. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, talk, hear and reach with hands and arms. Must also be able to lift, bend, crouch, kneel, climb, reach, etc. as needed. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. on a regular basis, and lift up to 100 lbs. with human or mechanical assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distance vision. Hazardous materials, high levels of heat and noise exist in the daily work environment. Ability to work and walk about in a manufacturing shop floor environment, wear required protective clothing, i.e., steel toe shoes and safety glasses. Ability to operate forklift.

Targeted pay range: $24/hr. - $25/hr.

Chesterton is committed to paying all its employees in a fair and equitable manner. The pay range associated with this position ($24/hr. - $25/hr. DOE) is Chesterton's good-faith salary estimate for the presently available position. Several roles at Chesterton are considered “leveled” positions and as such, the company reserves the right to advertise and or hire for this position at appropriate level depending on applicant’s skillset/experience. If the salary range to be offered for a “leveled” based position (I, II, III, etc.) is different than what was advertised on any posting, that range will be discussed with the candidate before they are formally invited to interview.

Hired applicants may be eligible for additional incentive compensation depending on the level and or function of the position which will be discussed with the candidate prior to formal interview. Payments under these programs are not guaranteed and are dependent upon a variety of factors including, but not limited to, individual performance, business unit performance, and/or the company’s performance.

Please note that the final salary offered for any position will be based on many factors, including but not limited to: candidate qualifications such as education and experience, internal equity, geographical location, and budget. Please note, it is not the company's usual practice to hire near or at the top of a pay range for any position that is available.
