Job summary

The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction - Correctional Reception Center in Orient, OH is seeking a Maintenance Repair Worker 3 to lead inmate crews and perform semi-skilled and skilled maintenance tasks across electrical, carpentry, plumbing, and grounds keeping functions.

You will inspect facilities, perform preventive maintenance, operate tools and equipment, and assist in enforcing security protocols.

Qualifications

  • Formal education in arithmetic including addition and subtraction; reading, writing and speaking basic English.
  • 12 months of training or 12 months of experience in maintenance repair (electrical, plumbing, carpentry, masonry, and use of tools).
  • Valid commercial driver’s license if motor equipment is regulated by state law; firefighters’ course may apply in some divisions.

Responsibilities

  • Lead worker duties: direct and train inmates or staff in semi-skilled/skilled maintenance tasks.
  • Perform semi-skilled repairs: lighting, electrical outlets, switches, motors, fixtures, heating/cooling components.
  • Carry out carpentry repairs: doors, locks, cabinets, floors, walls, windows, stairs.
  • Repair plumbing equipment: pipes, fixtures, valves, pumps, heating units.

Job Description
What You’ll Do:
  • Serves as lead worker (e.g., provides work direction, training) over inmates, or other assigned staff in performance of semi-skilled and skilled maintenance repair work (e.g., electrical, carpentry, grounds keeping, plumbing).
  • Performs semi-skilled and skilled maintenance repair of equipment (e.g., light fixtures, electrical outlets, switches, motors, appliances, electrical circuits, installs fixtures, repair and adjust fans, clocks, cookers, electrical components of heating and cooling systems, consoles, replaces disconnects and fuses on various electrical equipment)
  • Performs semi-skilled and skilled carpentry repairs (e.g., doors, locks cabinets, chairs, desks, floors, walls, windows, stairways, partitions).
  • Performs semi-skilled and skilled repair of plumbing equipment (e.g., water and steam lines, sewer pipes, trap fittings, plumbing fixtures, pumps, regulators, valves, faucets, toilets, sinks, bathtubs, heating radiators, chilled water lines)
  • Performs interior custodial duties (e.g., mops, sweeps, waxes floors, washes wall and windows)
  • Performs exterior grounds keeping duties.
  • Removes snow and ice from sidewalks.
  • On a continuous basis, inspects buildings and equipment for needed repairs or replacements.
  • Performs systematic and routine preventive maintenance of assigned area.
  • Operates machine tools and welding equipment in making repairs to metal parts and equipment.
  • Ensures secure maintenance of tools and completes tool counts and inventories
  • Assists in related job crafts as required
  • Controls/restricts inmate movement to assigned areas
  • Conducts searches of inmates when a breach of security is suspected
  • Responds to emergencies
  • Attends meetings and trainings
  • Participates on institution committees

Qualifications

Formal education in arithmetic that includes addition & subtraction & in reading, writing & speaking common English vocabulary; 12 mos. trg. or 12 mos. exp. in maintenance repair (e.g., basic electrical, plumbing, carpentry, masonry & use of associated hand & power tools & equipment). Valid commercial driver's license required if motor equipment is of type & size regulated by Sections 4506.01 & 4506.12 of Ohio revised code; in Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry only, applicants must have successfully completed the mandated basic firefighter/introduction to fire behavior course (S-130/S-190).

-Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above may be substituted for the experience required, but not for the mandated licensure.

Pre-Employment Drug Testing:

All final applicants tentatively selected for this position will be required to submit to urinalysis to test for illegal drug use prior to appointments. Testing will also be performed for the presence of marijuana. An applicant with a positive test shall not be offered employment unless the applicant submits medical documentation of legally prescribed medications or a recommendation for medical marijuana.
