Job summary

State of South Carolina is seeking a full-time park maintenance worker for Hampton Plantation State Historic Site, located in the southern Santee Delta region. You will perform groundskeeping, repairs, and general maintenance to support the park’s operations and visitor experience.

You will assist with educational programming, administrative duties, and safety compliance, ensuring a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for park guests and staff alike.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 1 year of general maintenance experience.
  • Knowledge of landscaping, gardening and grounds keeping.
  • Ability to read technical manuals and bulletins.
  • Skill in using tools and equipment for building and grounds maintenance.
  • Ability to operate power tools and motorized equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Performs basic grounds maintenance and improvements.
  • Assists with developing educational programming through personal contact and written communication.
  • Assists with park administration duties and planning of long- and short-term goals; collects and reports revenue.
  • Performs janitorial responsibilities and repairs (carpentry, masonry, electrical, plumbing).
  • Maintains a safe work environment.
  • Delivers quality customer service and ensures visitors have a positive experience.
  • Maintains records for maintenance and tools/equipment.
  • Promotes teamwork and represents the office on agency teams.

Job description

Job Responsibilities

Located in the southern Santee Delta region, Hampton Plantation State Historic Site is home to the remote, final remnants of a colonial-era rice plantation. The plantation now serves as an interpretive site for the system of slavery and rice cultivation in the region from the colonial period through the end of the Civil War. The property also tells the story of the freed people who made their homes in the Santee Delta region for generations after emancipation.

Job Purpose And Duties

Performs duties requiring a basic level of skills necessary for maintenance and upkeep of state parks to include repair and construction of facilities, operation and repair of motorized equipment, grounds keeping and landscaping activities. Assists with the administration and the operation of a state park; assist park visitors.

  • Performs basic grounds maintenance and improvements and assists with more involved tasks and projects (including grounds keeping, landscaping, etc.).
  • Assists with conducting and developing educational programing through personal contact, oral and written communication.
  • Assists with park administrative duties in accordance with department policy and procedures and planning of long and short-term goals. Collect and account for revenue and produce required reports.
  • Performs janitorial responsibilities within park facilities, conducts miscellaneous repairs and park improvements, to include carpentry, masonry, electrical, and plumbing.
  • Maintains a safe work environment.
  • Work to accomplish the mission of the Park Service through the core values of Stewardship and Service. Effectively deliver quality customer service and address visitor concerns in a timely manner. Work to ensure that visitors leave with a positive experience and a desire to return.
  • Performs routine and preventive maintenance on all park tools, electrical and gas powered motorized equipment. Keeps maintenance records.
  • Practice and promote teamwork within the park and/or district, throughout the agency and with external agency stakeholders. Represent office as an active member on agency teams assigned throughout the year.
Minimum And Additional Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent and one (1) year of general maintenance experience.

Additional Requirements
  • Position requires medium to heavy lifting, walking, and standing on uneven terrain, crawling, and working at heights. Exposure to weather conditions, cleaning agents, and other materials and substances used in maintaining park facilities and grounds. Position works flexible work schedule, including weekends and holidays.
  • Knowledge of landscaping, gardening and grounds keeping. Knowledge of park policies, rules and regulations. Ability to understand technical manuals, bulletins and related instruction. Skill in the use of tools and equipment used in building and grounds maintenance and repair. Ability to read and understand written procedures and directions; ability to perform simple arithmetic computations. Ability to operate a variety of power tools and motorized equipment.
  • Must possess a valid South Carolina Driver's License.
Additional Comments

Actual Job Location: Hampton Plantation State Historic Site

Full-time, 40 hours per week rotating schedule including weekends and holidays.
