Job summary

WestRock Company is seeking a Maintenance Planner to optimize planning and scheduling of mechanical maintenance in a heavy industrial setting. You will prepare work packages, manage materials, and coordinate with supervisors to ensure safe, cost‑effective execution.

You will develop preventive maintenance work orders, support outages, and monitor costs while collaborating with teams. Strong communication and experience with PM tools are preferred.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Technology field or 5+ years in heavy industrial maintenance.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
  • Proficiency with MS Office software.
  • Experience with MS Project or similar PM software.
  • Familiarity with JD Edwards is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Provides complete work order packages for planned work including scope, specs, safety, materials, tools, and permits.
  • Follows maintenance workflow to convert identified work into ready-to-schedule status.
  • Develops and maintains detailed preventive maintenance work orders.
  • Attends or leads weekly planning coordination meetings and reviews backlog.
  • Coordinates outages, manpower, and field days with supervisors and coordinators.
  • Provides oversight to contractors during outages as needed.
  • Works with Purchasing to secure best quality and fair pricing; recycles unused parts.

CAREER OPPORTUNITY

The Maintenance Planner provides for effective use of labor, materials, and equipment through the planning, scheduling, coordination, and reporting of work for the assigned department.

HOW YOU WILL IMPACT SMURFIT WESTROCK
  • Provides complete work order packages for all planned work, including scope of work, specifications, instructions, safety information, material requirements, resource availability, purchase requisitions, tools and equipment, location, permits, estimates, and scopes for contractor bidding.
  • Follows maintenance workflow processes to convert identified work into "ready to schedule" status.
  • Develops internal coding for materials, parts, and supplies; updates equipment parts lists or BOMs.
  • Attends or leads weekly planning coordination meetings and assists supervisors in reviewing backlog.
  • Develops and maintains detailed preventive maintenance work orders.
  • Assists in identifying planned or ready-to-schedule work that can be tasked to shift maintenance during downtime or emergencies.
  • Develops outage and shutdown work lists and manpower requirements with supervisors and coordinators.
  • Provides supervisory oversight to contractors during outages or field days as needed.
  • Distributes outage work lists two weeks prior to minor field days and two months prior to major shutdowns.
  • Assists in coordinating and executing work during outages, with potential oversight of internal and external labor resources.
  • Works with contractors to ensure understanding of scopes of work and to facilitate accurate bid submissions.
  • Exerts fiscal responsibility by working with Purchasing to secure best quality and fair pricing, recycles unused parts, and evaluates repairable items appropriately.
WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED
  • Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree in an Engineering or Technology related field, or five or more years of related professional experience in a heavy industrial environment working with mechanical maintenance or engineering teams.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
  • Proficiency with MS Office software.
  • Experience with project management software such as MS Project (2007 or later).
  • Experience with work management systems such as JD Edwards is a plus.
