Job summary

Radius Recycling is seeking a Maintenance Planner to orchestrate daily resources of the maintenance department, ensuring equipment readiness and safe operations at our Oakland facility. You will coordinate with facilities supervisors, maintenance clerks and Purchasing to schedule work orders, track assets, and deliver timely reports to senior management while upholding safety and quality standards.

Strong organizational and communication skills, plus experience with Oracle MDCS and vendor

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred; 2–5 years administrative experience in heavy equipment environment required.
  • 5–7 years of experience in lieu of a degree accepted.

Job description

The Maintenance Planner, (MP) report to the Maintenance Manager. The MP is responsible for the daily orchestration of the maintenance department’s resources as necessary to achieve maximum equipment readiness and utilization. The MP is an essential maintenance administrative position, and is in effect, the virtual cornerstone of the Maintenance department. The MP will work with the facilities supervisors to schedule the maintenance and repair of facility equipment. The incumbent will work closely with other members of the maintenance department, including the Maintenance Clerks and Purchasing Agent to ensure work orders and other requests are completed in a timely fashion and in conjunction with the needs of the facility.

This position operates within defined parameters. The primary goal of this position is to achieve excellence in all facets of the position. Providing the highest quality product safely, effectively and efficiently decreases accidents and errors and increase profits.

Essential Functions
Environmental and Health & Safety (H&S)
  • Providing a safe environment for all employees, customers and visitors.
Operational Performance & Best Business Practices
  • Responsible for ensuring that the necessary maintenance resources are available to ensure that equipment is ready and is able to be utilized in a timely fashion.
  • Works with internal resources as well as outside vendors to ensure efficient application of these resources is achieved
  • Oversees department functions relating to maintenance work order creation, material requisitioning, recording of equipment, operating hours, fuel & fluid usage, man-hour tracking, and auditing.
  • Responsible for providing a timely and targeted report to senior management on work orders, material requisitioning, recording of equipment, operating hours, fuel & fluid usage, man-hour tracking and auditing.
  • Works with Purchasing Agents, Maintenance Clerks and Warehouseman to ensure that material requirements are readily available for completing repairs to open maintenance actions.
  • Responsible for ensuring that when a priority requisition is submitted that and established “Urgency of Need Designators” are used when ordering any maintenance or repair to ensure a timely completion of maintenance is completed on a down piece of equipment
  • Responsible for working with departmental supervisors on a regular basis to ensure that equipment needs are met.
  • Works with departmental managers to create plans on scheduled repairs to ensure minimal impact on the operational departments but without sacrificing the timely execution of the scheduled Preventive Maintenance requirements.
  • Ensures that all Assets are properly recoded in the Oracle MDCS and ensure accuracy, not only with the overall asset listing for the facility but further in the assignment of such assets to the owning operations departments.
Administrative Management
  • Monitors and maintains exempt and hourly staff at cost effective and competitive levels.
  • Monitors supervisory practices for self and his/her direct reports to ensure compliance with HR policies and union contracts.
  • Reviews performance of direct reports.
  • Interviews prospective management and/or production employees.
  • Works with Human Resources personnel to prepare job descriptions

Internal contacts will be by phone, email and face-to-face contact with others, specifically the departments within the Metals Recycling Business.

External contacts will be by phone, email and face-to-face contact with vendors, customers and suppliers

Job Conditions

Workload is cyclical and can present significant time pressures when strict adherence to deadlines is critical. Workload is often reactive and cannot be anticipated or planned for. Often many extra hours are required, weekend, weekday and holidays. Exposure to physical operations at metal recycling yards.

Occasional exposure to inclement weather conditions. Work pressure can be substantial during peak times, requiring considerable adaptability; disturbances of work flow, and/or irregularities in work schedule are expected and occur on an intermittent basis. Regular overtime is required.

Physical Activities Required To Perform Essential Functions

Ability to: lift and carry up to 10 pounds occasionally; sit for extended periods of time, up to 6-8 hours per day; write by hand and keyboard for extended periods of time, up to 6-8 hours per day; assemble papers, paper punch, staple, file; apply sufficient force to open and close file drawers. Ability to communicate by speech and hearing continuously. Communication is primarily by phone, email and sometimes in person, with other departments within the Radius Group. Visual acuity needed for close detail work, preparing and analyzing data figures, accounting, and computer use.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree preferred. 2-5 years administrative experience, in a Heavy Equipment environment required. 5-7 years of experience in lieu of degree. Previous supervisory experience required. This position requires possession of a valid driver’s license and the ability to drive an automobile.

Proficiency in all MS Office applications, including Outlook; typing and 10-key competency; accuracy and attention to detail; excellent professional, oral and written communication skills with all levels of personnel and customers. Ability to: prioritize multiple projects, work well in a time sensitive environment, follow instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form, and deal with problems involving several specific variables in or from standard situations. Needs to be flexible.
