Job summary

Packaging Corporation of America (PCA) is seeking a Maintenance Planner to manage planning and scheduling for plant maintenance, improving uptime and reducing downtime across departments. Qualifications

  • Associate's degree or certification in production maintenance; Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Three years of experience in equipment and electrical maintenance in corrugated manufacturing.
  • Experience with maintenance of corrugated and packaging equipment; electrical and mechanical maintenance.
  • Experience with manufacturing safety practices and environmental issues preferred.
  • Strong analytical, mechanical, mathematical, safety and environmental skills.
  • Experience with computer systems including Microsoft Office and maintenance scheduling software.

Position Summary:

The Maintenance Planner is responsible for planning and scheduling for effective utilization of the workforce, materials and equipment with the purpose of executing plant maintenance work to increase up time and minimize unscheduled downtime. This position identifies safety needs, staffing, materials and special equipment to execute maintenance work as well as conducting equipment data collection, processing, and analysis.

Dimensions:

Specific dimensions for this position vary based on plant size. For example, an Extra Large plant typically has an employee population exceeding 125 employees and an operating profit in excess of $3 million, while a Small plant typically has an employee population of less than 50 employees and an operating profit less than $1 million.

Principle Accountabilities:
  • Coordinate department activity with the Customer Service, Scheduling and Production teams to develop optimum maintenance schedule, limit production lags and assure an even flow of work through all the departments.
  • Plan and schedule the time, parts, and personnel necessary to meet maintenance and production requirements with a minimum of downtime and cost.
  • Estimate, plan, coordinate, and schedule maintenance work including the weekly maintenance schedules, regulatory inspection work orders, annual routine outages, scheduled shutdowns, and the preventative maintenance program.
  • Inspect jobs in progress; determine necessary alterations to plan and act accordingly.
  • Assist in accurate, complete, and timely preparation of reports relating to work loads, performance, backlog, delays, work orders, equipment history, execution, unscheduled break-in work, and regulatory reporting. Prepare other reports as needed.
  • Schedule and coordinate outside contractors, inspections, and OEM support
  • Determine and ensure personnel and material requirements for maintenance work.
  • Lead efforts alongside the Maintenance Supervisor to ensure a high-performing maintenance department, including vendor selection, maintenance backlog management, meeting facilitation and staff oversight.
  • Effectively utilize BPMS, to coordinate, prioritize and manage work orders. Maintain accurate documentation of completed work orders, preventative maintenance processes and updates to equipment records.
  • Partner with Environmental, Health and Safety team to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulation in daily operations.
  • Coordinate with Maintenance Clerk to oversee procurement and inventory of spare and consumable parts (including critical spares), while ensuring cost control within the established budget.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and injury-free work environment by ensuring health and safety procedures are understood and executed by all employees.
  • Know and follow policies and procedures of the company, including those governing financial controls, hot work authorization, non-routine operations, and electrical task assignments. Shares information that would benefit other members of the team and find ways to improve the delivery of service to our customers.

Decision Making:

The Maintenance Planner is required to exercise discretion and creativity in determining the best way to ensure scheduled maintenance for the many departments within the plant while keeping the downtime to a minimum. The Maintenance Planner has the primary responsibility for prioritizing, planning & scheduling preventative maintenance programs and as such is expected to exercise solid judgment in managing personnel across departments and managing the plant's resources for the maximum return.

Interactions with Customers and Contacts:

Internally, the Maintenance Planner coordinates maintenance scheduling with all plant departments to ensure limited downtime during production. Externally, the Maintenance Planner is responsible for researching and selecting part and supply vendors.

Position Requirements
  • Education equivalent to associate's degree or completed certification in production maintenance required. Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Three (3) years of previous experience in equipment and electrical maintenance in corrugated manufacturing.
  • Working knowledge of maintenance of corrugated and packaging equipment and electrical and mechanical maintenance.
  • Experience with manufacturing safety practices and understanding of environmental issues preferred.
  • Strong analytical, mechanical, mathematical, safety and environmental skills.
  • Working knowledge of computer systems including experience with Microsoft Office and maintenance scheduling software.
  • Strong organization and analytical skills
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, deadline-oriented environment, prioritize assignments, and handle multiple projects and/or requests concurrently.
  • Effective communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with individuals throughout the company on departmental procedures, policies, practices, and requests for information.
  • Previous work experience as a member of a team, or a strong understanding of the importance of open communication and information sharing between team members.
  • Able to work flexible hours as needed.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
  • Starting salary range for position: $86,240 - $129,360
  • Bonus: Annual - Based upon individual contribution and overall, Company performance.
  • Paid Vacation: Three (3) weeks per calendar year. Pro-rata Vacation during the initial year of hire based upon start date within the calendar year.
