Job summary

SSAB is seeking a Mechanical Maintenance Operator in the United States to maintain, repair, and improve industrial equipment. You will apply millwright skills, welding, hydraulics, pneumatics, and basic PLC knowledge to keep plant operations running safely and efficiently.

The role requires strong mechanical background and at least 2 years in heavy industry. It offers full-time hours with rotating 12-hour shifts, days and nights, OT eligibility, and a comprehensive benefits package.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent GED or HSE.
  • Associates degree or certificate in mechanical or electrical field preferred.
  • Strong mechanical background with at least 2 years of heavy industrial experience.
  • Heavy industry mechanical experience with basic PLC/electrical understanding preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Pass Stick overhead 3G welding test.
  • Minimum Microsoft Office suite computer skills required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform the essential functions of a millwright with extensive welding applications.
  • Maintain basic hydraulic and pneumatic systems in an industrial environment.
  • Perform basic plumbing and pipefitting and structural repairs in elevated positions.
  • Maintain mechanical equipment and perform repairs; assist in solutions for operating problems.
  • Understand PLC interaction with hydraulic systems and operators; implement equipment modifications.
  • Work in a team-oriented facility and perform administrative tasks as assigned.
  • Rotate 12-hour swing shifts including days and nights; overtime eligible.
  • No travel is expected for this position.

Job description

The Mechanical Maintenance Operator is responsible for maintaining, repairing, and improving industrial equipment and facilities. This role combines millwright skills, welding expertise, and basic knowledge of hydraulics, pneumatics, plumbing, and industrial systems to ensure safe and efficient plant operations while supporting troubleshooting and process improvements in a team environment.

Main Responsibilities

Perform the essential functions of a millwright with extensive welding applications

Perform basic maintenance of hydraulic and pneumatic systems in an industrial environment.

Perform basic plumbing and pipefitting skills (ie. perform structural repairs to buildings, platforms, machinery, utility piping and structures at times in elevated positions).

Perform maintenance engineering functions and repairs for all plant mechanical equipment.

Possess basic knowledge of industrial electricity and understanding of how a PLCs’ interacts with the hydraulic systems and the operators.

Install modifications to existing equipment as required

Work in a team-oriented facility

Assist in the development of solutions to operating problems and improvements to the processes as required

Perform administrative tasks as may be assigned from time to time


Education, Experience, and Competencies

Required Education:

High School diploma or equivalent GED or HSE

Preferred Education:

Associates degree or certificate in mechanical or electrical field

Required Experience:

Strong Mechanical background

Minimum of 2 years of heavy industrial experience

Preferred Experience:

Heavy industry mechanical experience with basic PLC/electrical understanding.

In addition, strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills are required.

Pass Stick overhead 3G welding test.

Minimum Microsoft Office suite computer skills are required

  • Position is full time, hourly, and is eligible for overtime
  • Position works rotating 12-hour swing shifts to include days and nights
  • No travel is expected for this position

Working Conditions

The position requires the following vision and hearing capabilities:

  • Peripheral vision and depth perception.

The employee will frequently be required to:

  • Stand, walk, sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
  • Twist at waist level, reach above shoulder level, reach at and/or below waist level.
  • Use both hands for grasping, fingering, gripping and feeling textures and temperatures.
  • Lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
  • Perform repetitive tasks for extended periods.

The employee will occasionally be required to:

  • Lift and/or move up to 50 pounds

The employee will work in the following conditions:

  • Extreme hot and cold conditions.
  • Wet and humid conditions.
  • Amid fumes, dust, dirt, and smoke.
  • In confined areas and heights/high places.
  • Near moving parts of heavy machinery, equipment in motion and high voltage equipment.
  • Amid mechanical, electrical, and chemical hazards and industrial magnets.
  • While wearing safety equipment and/or clothing for protection from hazards.
