Job Overview

VDOT's Staunton District's Mauzy and Chimney Rock AHQs seek highly qualified Highway Maintenance Operators to join their team. Responsibilities include:

  • Performing roadway maintenance tasks such as clearing drainage, debris removal, brush cutting, and general maintenance.
  • Operating equipment like dump trucks, backhoes, graders, tar distributors, rollers, loaders, mowing tractors, etc.
  • Using hand and power tools and manual labor.
  • Responding to emergencies such as accidents and debris blocking roads, including outside of normal hours, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Setting up work zones and managing traffic control to ensure safety.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
  • Skill in operating and maintaining hand and power tools.
  • Safety shoes required.
  • Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months and maintain them.
  • Ability to read and follow instructions.
  • Experience with highway maintenance and repair equipment.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of highway maintenance procedures.
Additional Considerations
  • Experience in emergency operations, snow removal, storm response, and accident cleanup.
  • Experience in preventive maintenance and minor repairs.
  • Training or education in Maintenance, Vehicle Operations, or related fields is desirable.
  • Valid Commercial Driver's License with endorsements preferred.

Additional Notes

All drivers without a valid CDL must obtain it within 11 months of hire. Federal FMCSA regulations require entry-level drivers to complete 160 hours of approved training before obtaining a CDL or endorsements. VDOT may assist with training costs.
