Darke County Park District is seeking a Maintenance Operations Assistant Manager to oversee general and preventative maintenance, groundskeeping, habitat maintenance, and public support at district facilities.

Under supervision, you will supervise PT/seasonal staff and volunteers, coordinate with other departments, and ensure safe, clean, and well‑maintained parks for environmental learning and recreation.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma required.

  • Must pass Ohio BCI&I criminal background.
  • Willingness to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Job description

Under the direct supervision of the Maintenance Operations Manager, the Maintenance

Operations Assistant Manager performs general and preventative maintenance duties,

groundskeeping, habitat maintenance, mowing/trimming, bike trail maintenance/upkeep, special

event support & assisting the public. The Maintenance Operations Assistant Manager organizes

and carries out front-line, “in‑the-field” work to be performed by Maintenance Operation

Technicians (PT and Seasonal), volunteers, court‑appointed workers as well as contractual

workers and conducts much of the same work themselves with minimal supervision; all toward

the goal of providing safe, clean and well‑maintained parks that create places for happy

experiences, environmental learning, and healthy recreational pursuits. Close interaction with the

other departments is required on a regular basis to ensure all departments are able to meet the

public’s needs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists with managing and maintaining various facilities, structures, and systems with an emphasis on sustainable building practices.
  • Assists with managing and maintaining various natural habitats, including prairie, wetland, forest, meadow, and riparian, while following industry best practices and the recommendations of the natural resource/program department. May include controlled prairie burns and/or monitored herbicide treatment as needed.
  • Assist and oversee the part‑time, seasonal, and court‑ordered workers on a daily basis.
  • Maintain vehicles, equipment, and power/hand tools associated with daily projects and tasks. Operate hauling rig to move larger equipment, including tractors and mowers to various work sites. Perform routine preventive maintenance procedures on equipment, reporting repair requirements as needed.
  • Perform a variety of maintenance tasks and projects associated with facilities & infrastructure maintenance including electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting, and
  • Assist other departments as required or assigned, perform special projects and any other related duties as required or assigned. Supports district needs outside the assigned subject area, including special events and programming.
  • Works outdoors in all weather conditions and plans accordingly.
  • Works assigned schedule, exhibits regular and punctual attendance and works outside of normal schedule as required. Must be willing to work occasional weekends or evenings for scheduled and unscheduled occurrences.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Assists with the supervision of assigned staff and volunteers, court‑ordered, community service

and contractual workers. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the Darke

Co Parks’ policies and applicable laws, and delegated authority.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provides service to the public, responding to questions, helping, and providing information.
  • Collaborates within and across departmental boundaries to provide information and service to others in the organization to contribute to the effective operation of the agency and all staff.
  • Attends professional development and training opportunities. Maintains required certifications.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Facilities:
  • Develops and maintains a master Facilities calendar for all park buildings and structures routine and preventative maintenance for all building operations.
  • Inspects properties annually to ensure safe conditions. Recommends changes and/or makes necessary repairs to correct hazards in a timely manner.
  • Schedules and completes the required operations tasks in order to keep the District operational including, but not limited to
  • Plans, evaluates, and implements janitorial and preventive maintenance schedules for all buildings, either personally, or through assigned staff and/or outside vendors.
  • Skill in basic construction practices, building maintenance & safety requirements and methods; maintenance equipment and procedures; electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and general carpentry/masonry methods; grounds maintenance requirements
  • Conducts routine inspections and repairs of heating, cooling, air handling, lighting, plumbing, and other building systems to determining the most cost-effective and sustainable means of maintenance, repair, and/or replacement.
Landscaping:
  • Assists with required operations tasks in order to keep the District operational including, but not limited to
  • Builds or repairs park kiosks, fences, bridges, handrails, benches, etc
  • Plants grass, shrubs, trees, pollinator patches and prairies
  • Clearing of brush and the removal of trees, specifically places available to the public such as trails, footbridges & buildings. Perform routine weeding, pruning & fertilizing of landscape beds & entry sign areas throughout parks.
  • Assist with the maple syrup production program.
  • Sweeping, trash removal, mowing, watering, trimming, raking, shoveling, snow removal etc.
  • Repairs and performs small concrete jobs, preventative maintenance, etc.
  • Shovels and moves dirt manually or with a tractor
EQUIPMENT OPERATED

Vehicles, trailers, hand tools, power tools and equipment, chainsaws, GPS, and recreation equipment (canoes, kayaks, bikes). Computer; printer; calculator; copier; telephone; and other standard office equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. A combination of appropriate education, training, course work, and experience may qualify an applicant to demonstrate the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • High School diploma, and
  • Minimum two (2) years experience in building maintenance and repair, groundskeeping, including working knowledge of plumbing, electrical repair, carpentry, and HVAC OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • Must pass Ohio BCI&I criminal background
  • Willingness and ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays, as required.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
  • Required: Ohio Drivers’ License which meets Darke County Park Districts’ insurance carrier guidelines
  • Within one year of employment (acquire & maintain): Red Cross First Aid, CPR and AED or equivalent
  • Within four years of employment (acquire & maintain): Various certificates may be required: wastewater treatment, applicator, operator, public operator’s license for pesticide application and/or playground safety Burn Boss certification
