Job summary

Harford County Sheriff's Office seeks a facilities maintenance technician to troubleshoot, repair and replace security, plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems. You will supervise inmate details, oversee contractors, and maintain inventories and safety data sheets.

You must have a high school diploma or GED and pass background screens. The role requires punctual on-call availability and collaboration with staff, vendors, and inmates within a corrections setting.

Qualifications

  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED certificate recognized by the Maryland State Board of Education.
  • Must pass comprehensive background investigation and criminal record check; medical exam and drug/alcohol screening; polygraph exam; and psychological screening.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot, inspect, repair and replace security mechanisms, including door locks and card readers.
  • Troubleshoot, inspect, repair and replace cameras, video recording system and intercom systems.
  • Troubleshoot, inspect, repair and replace plumbing devices and related systems.
  • Troubleshoot, inspect and repair electrical devices; work under Master Electrician’s License.
  • Coordinate and oversee contractors for service, repairs or installations.
  • Supervise inmates during details and maintain inventory of tools.
  • Maintain safety data sheets and manage purchases and paperwork.

Job Description Summary: Troubleshoot, inspect, repair and replace security mechanisms, plumbing equipment, electrical devices, and air conditioning and heating systems; oversee contractors who come in to perform repairs; supervise inmates on details; perform other duties as assigned. Starting salary is $25.65 per hour with opportunities for overtime, compensatory time, and holiday pay.

Essential Duties
  • Troubleshoot, inspect, repair and replace security mechanisms, including door locks, sliding gates, card readers, etc.
  • Troubleshoot, inspect, repair and replace cameras, video recording system, intercom system, and Door Access Control System, including card readers.
  • Troubleshoot, inspect, repair and replace plumbing devices such as electronic flush valves, solenoids, showers, piping, drainage systems, toilets and sinks; unclog sanitation drains to remove obstructions.
  • Troubleshoot, inspect, repair and replace or install electrical devices—including wall receptacles and switches, circuit breakers, lighting fixtures, etc.; (Note: This work is done under the Master Electrician’s License).
  • Troubleshoot, inspect, and repair, if possible, combination air conditioning/heating rooftop units, boilers, hot water heaters and all associated piping.
  • Coordinate and oversee contractors who come to perform requested service, repairs, or installations.
  • Supervise inmates during various details including landscaping, mowing, changing light bulbs, floor or ceiling tiles, snow removal, etc.
  • Maintain inventory and inspections of tools.
  • Maintain and update chemical material safety data sheets that pertain to the Maintenance Unit.
  • Purchase supplies and/or services, maintain credit card billing, and reconcile paperwork monthly.
  • Be on call for emergencies and keep supervisor and relevant others informed of issues in a timely fashion.
  • Maintain positive relationships with detention center staff, vendors, contractors, and inmates.
  • Keep informed on current maintenance practices by attending workshops, educational programs, or reading specialized literature.
  • Attend meetings and participate in various teams when needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to act as a representative of the Sheriff’s Office to the public.
  • Working knowledge of building maintenance and general repair and installation procedures.
  • Working knowledge of security devices.
  • Working knowledge of basic plumbing, electrical and HVAC operations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff; successfully communicate with staff, contractors, vendors, inmates, and members of the public; and work as a team.
  • Ability to establish priorities and organize workload effectively and efficiently.
  • Ability to maintain a pleasant and productive working atmosphere.
  • Ability to respond properly in emergency situations and complete assignments under pressure.
  • Ability to operate relevant computer systems, including hardware and software (MS Word, Excel), and office machines.
  • Ability to attend and successfully complete all MPCTC required entrance level training and annual in‑service training.
  • Ability to pass a comprehensive background investigation and random drug screening.
Selected Candidate
  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED certificate recognized by the Maryland State Board of Education.
  • Must have three (3) years of related maintenance experience.
  • Must have a valid driver's license with no more than 3 points and a relatively clean record with no convictions for DUI.
  • Must pass comprehensive background investigation and criminal record check; medical exam and drug/alcohol screening; polygraph exam; and psychological screening.
  • Must provide handwriting sample for review.
  • Must appear before and receive favorable recommendation from Oral Interview Board.
  • Visible tattoos are permitted if they are not offensive, indecent, extremist, racist or sexist; no visible tattoos will be permitted on the face or head.
  • Must possess a history and exhibit the characteristics of honesty, reliability, integrity and interpersonal skills.
  • Any criminal conviction(s) and/or arrest(s) may be grounds for disqualification.
