Position Summary:

Assists in the performance of duties necessary to keep the physical structure and associated equipment of hospital in good repair. Minor electrical work, mechanical repairs and other duties relating to maintenance are the primary duties. Participates in performance improvement and CQI activities.

Performs all authorized/related tasks involved in the storage, repair, maintenance, checkout, check-in of tools and equipment contained and managed by the Facilities Department. Processes all aspects of Facility Department warehouse requisitions, receiving, stocking, and issuing supplies and materials.

General Duties:

  • Primary duties include service, troubleshoot and repair all Nurse Call Systems and TV issues throughout the hospital.
  • Performs all assigned tasks in a professional manner to reflect the highest integrity of the Engineering Department.
  • Assists in maintaining and repairing HVAC controls and associated equipment to maximize efficiency levels in all environmentally controlled areas.
  • Performs urgent corrective, routine and requisitioned repairs of electrical, mechanical and plumbing systems as required.
  • Performs maintenance on equipment and systems as required.
  • As required, assists in maintaining electrical wiring and emergency generator systems. Inspects and tests equipment/systems.
  • Performs preventive maintenance duties to all physical structures of hospital and complies with all building safety codes. This includes facility equipment and associated controls.
  • Assists in replacing, installing, repairing and testing electrical circuits, equipment, appliances and lighting systems as required.
  • Maintains routine records of all inspections, preventive maintenance and repairs performed on any equipment or system.
  • Performs manual duties as requested (e.g., moving supplies or furniture, replacing light bulbs, removing trash or scrap material).
  • Reads blueprints, interprets instructions and prepares specifications.
  • Works day, evening or night shift as assigned.
  • Ability to work independently with only normal supervision.
  • Knowledge of fire alarm and signal systems.
  • Ability to use and maintain plant tools and equipment properly.
  • Knowledge and adherence to safety precautions.
  • Participates in performance improvement and information management activities.
  • Demonstrates ability to identify patient-specific needs to promote a safe environment.
  • Supports a culture of safety and quality.
  • Responds to emergency codes (e.g., Code Red, Pink/Purple, Triage).
  • Order parts, materials and equipment for Central Plant projects.
  • Procure parts, materials and tools for maintenance projects.
  • Handle emergency parts pickup.
  • Research best pricing for tools, parts and materials through hospital-approved vendors.
  • Fill out requisitions and order parts online.
  • Manage inventory of tools, parts, and supplies.
  • Ensure all equipment is operational before checkout and after return.
  • Maintain equipment across hospital areas.
  • Keep inventory of tools and parts, order new as needed.
  • Maintain a small stock of commonly used parts.
  • Organize and maintain the tool crib efficiently.
  • Maintain fuel supplies for equipment.
  • Keep manuals on power equipment and perform preventive maintenance.
  • Update and stock warehouse inventory.
  • Follow hospital rules, policies, and directives from supervisors.
  • Adhere to attendance policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by administration or supervisor.

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED; or 3-6 months related experience/training; or equivalent.

Additional Requirements:

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Computer proficiency required.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to understand and carry out instructions in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Problem-solving skills involving multiple variables.
  • Ability to work in a union environment.

Required Licenses/Certifications:

  • Current Los Angeles County Fire Card (within 30 days of employment).
  • Assault Response Competency (ARC) (within 30 days of employment).
