Job summary

The Quartz Corp in Spruce Pine is seeking a skilled maintenance technician to ensure efficient operation of plant equipment through a thorough understanding of mechanical and electrical machinery. You will perform routine and advanced maintenance, troubleshoot problems, repair or replace parts, and document work to support EHS, Quality, and Low-Cost Production priorities.

  • High School Diploma required.
  • Associates Degree or five years’ experience preferred.
  • Must become certified welder within six months to stay in classification.

Responsibilities

  • Adjust functional parts of devices and control instruments, using hand tools, levels, plumb bobs, and straightedges.
  • Clean and lubricate shafts, bearings, gears, and other parts of machinery.
  • Diagnose mechanical problems and determine how to correct them, checking blueprints, repair manuals, and parts catalogs as necessary.
  • Dismantle devices to gain access to and remove defective parts, using hoists, cranes, hand tools, and power tools.
  • Inspect, operate, and test machinery and equipment in order to diagnose machine malfunctions.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance to ensure that machines continue to run smoothly, building systems operate efficiently, and the physical condition of buildings does not deteriorate.
  • Repair or replace defective equipment parts using hand tools and power tools and reassemble equipment.
  • Record maintenance and repair work performed and the costs of the work.
  • Operate cutting torches or welding equipment to cut or join metal parts.
  • Mobile equipment service and repair/evaluation, re-ordering of parts, housekeeping of shop and other work areas.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job description

Ensure efficient and safe performance of plant equipment through utilizing a thorough understanding of mechanical and electrical operation of machinery. Carry out routine and advanced maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs so that a quality product can be delivered to the customer in a timely manner. Primarily responsible for ongoing equipment maintenance, detecting and diagnosing problems, repairing, and replacing parts in order to establish optimal equipment functioning and support the priorities of EHS, Quality, and Low-Cost Production.

Skill/knowledge Requirement:
  • Apply mechanical principles in the performance of his job with no supervision.
  • Tear down and rebuild and install mill parts with no supervision.
  • Troubleshoot electrical control circuits, read, and understand electrical schematics.
  • Exercise basic leadership and work coordination functions so the crew performs effectively, efficiently, and safely.
  • Understanding of blueprints and being able to work from blueprints with no supervision.
  • Become a certified welder. (Type to be determined). Must become certified welder within six months to stay in classification.
Required Activities: Position requires 70% walking and/or standing in an industrial environment. Will be exposed to all seasonal climatic conditions; exposed to dust, noise, and uneven sometimes slippery surfaces. Required to climb stairs, ladders, and elevated platforms to a height of 75 ft. Occasionally lifting, carrying, and/or pulling objects up to 100 lbs. Occasionally will operate company pickup truck and forklift. Constantly communicating with Operators, Maintenance, QA, and Supervisors.

Education/Experience: High School Diploma RequiredAssociates Degree or Five years’ experience preferred
