Job description

Job Objective:

Under the management of the Director of Engineering/Facilities Services, the Maintenance Mechanic II performs between 25% to 60% in a skilled trade, handling specialized duties related to maintenance and repair of building systems and equipment in trades such as electrical, carpentry, plumbing, refrigeration, painting, welding, HVAC, and plant maintenance to support the objectives of the engineering department.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Routine Maintenance of Campus Facilities:
  2. Diagnose, troubleshoot, and determine repair methods for equipment and systems based on blueprints and specifications.
  3. Start equipment, observe operation, read gauges, and adjust controls to maintain proper fluid, pressure, and temperature levels.
  4. Dismantle malfunctioning systems and test components using electrical and mechanical testing tools.
  5. Perform routine rounds and inspections across various facilities.
  6. Perform electrical wiring and control installations according to trade standards.
  7. Operate refrigeration recovery systems and maintain related records.
  8. Service and repair V.A.C. systems and other specialized equipment.
  9. Assemble components such as motors, controls, switches, and wiring harnesses using appropriate techniques.
  10. Disassemble, repair, rebuild, and install electrical components as needed.
  11. Conduct troubleshooting based on system performance specifications.
  12. Maintain and repair plumbing systems, steam traps, and piping.
  13. Keep logs of plant operation and maintenance activities.
  14. Operate and maintain HVAC systems, chillers, pumps, and related systems, ensuring proper chemical levels and record-keeping.
  15. Perform locksmith duties, including key making and lock repairs.
Preventative Maintenance:
  1. Inspect boilers and related equipment regularly, testing water quality and maintaining logs.
Computer/Customer Support:
  1. Operate and maintain the plant energy management system.
  2. Maintain records of time and materials used.
  3. Assist with engineering trouble calls and work order processing.
Non-Essential Duties:
  • Maintain lighting, cabinetry, furniture, and plumbing fixtures.
  • Keep work areas clean and organized.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge: Familiarity with hand tools, electrical materials, emergency power systems, control wiring, electrical codes, boiler operations, refrigeration, HVAC, and plumbing systems.

Skills: Operating hand and power tools, basic computer skills.

Abilities: Read and write English and technical manuals, interpret blueprints, design and estimate projects, follow instructions, work cooperatively, and work under pressure.

Education and Experience:
  • High School Diploma.
  • 5 years' experience in building maintenance and at least 1 year in a specified trade such as electrician, plumber, carpentry, etc.
Licensure and Certifications:
  • Refrigeration - EPA and CFC Certification preferred.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
  • Work in high temperature, noisy environments, often in tight spaces with dust and chemicals.
  • Lift up to 50 lbs, work from ladders, and handle refrigerants and chemicals.
  • Follow safety protocols to prevent exposure to hazards.
