ACPS in Charlottesville is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic I to provide entry-level building maintenance across HVAC, electrical, plumbing and carpentry systems. You will join a team and may work shifts or be on call for emergencies, with emphasis on reliability and safety.
The role requires a high school diploma and 3 years in Building Services or completion of an approved Apprenticeship Program, plus a valid Virginia driver’s license.

This is the entry level mechanic position. The employee works in a developing capacity with increased responsibility for performing a wide range of maintenance mechanic assignments. Under general supervision performs responsible semi-skilled work in the servicing, repair and maintenance of buildings and associated equipment. Shift work may be required. May be responsible for supervising less skilled workers. This position is designated as Essential Personnel and may be on call 24 hours, 7 days a week for emergency situations, including weather and other building emergencies.
General knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in general building maintenance work with thorough knowledge of methods, tools and equipment of two of the standard building trades; basic knowledge of occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions associated with work; ability to use basic test meters, read simple building prints, research parts and materials for repair projects; ability to follow oral and written communication.
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of high school and a minimum of 3 years’ experience in the Building Services, and satisfactory completion of the first and second year of approved Apprenticeship Program, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Drug screening and tuberculin test is required. Must possess a valid drivers' license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Work involves frequent walking, lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 lbs. Frequently works from ladders, in cramped spaces, in dusty conditions, and in inclement weather; regular contact with office personnel, other staff members, vendors, individuals from other departments and the general public. Work environment routinely exposes employee to potential major injuries, occasional exposure to hazardous substances. Work requires dexterity in using of both hands, hand-eye coordination and processing basic mechanical sequence of events.
