Job summary

St. Tammany Health System in Covington, LA, seeks a skilled maintenance technician to inspect and repair electrical and mechanical systems across the hospital campus. The role requires strong attention to safety, blueprint reading, and timely documentation of work orders.

Responsibilities include routine preventive maintenance, servicing HVAC/refrigeration equipment, and responding to calls for repairs. A valid driver's license and ability to operate hospital vehicles are required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Three years preferred in two or more building crafts, such as plumbing, commercial electric work, refrigeration and air conditioning, pneumatics.
• Minimum Type Level I and II refrigerant transition and recovery certification required within six months of hire.

Responsibilities

• Inspect electrical and mechanical equipment to detect malfunctions.
• Clean electrical and mechanical equipment (coils, motors, drain pans, etc.).
• Install electrical circuits, piping for water and drain lines, etc.
• Read and utilize blueprints.
• Respond to maintenance calls for blocked drains, malfunctioning ice machines, HVAC units, etc.
• Change oil in compressors and air filters in HVAC units; clean cooling towers.
• Inspect wheelchairs, beds, furniture, etc.; repair as needed.
• Make rounds to ensure Life Safety Code compliance and department policies.
• Efficiently manage time and document tasks accurately.
• Use electrical testing equipment proficiently.
• Assist Mechanic II’s when requested.

JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Scheduled Weekly Hours: 40

Schedule 6:30am - 5:00pm Wednesday- Wednesday 8 on 6 off.

Summary of the Job

Examples of “maintenance” are:

• Inspection of electrical and mechanical equipment to detect malfunctions
• Cleaning of electrical and mechanical equipment (coils, motors, drain pans, etc.)
• Installation of electrical circuits, piping for water and drain lines, etc.
• Sound knowledge of reading and utilizing blue prints
• Responds to and makes repairs from maintenance calls for blocked drain lines, malfunctioning ice machines, HVAC units, etc.
• Changing oil in compressors, air filters in HVAC units, cleaning cooling towers, etc.
• Inspection of wheelchairs, beds, furniture, etc. and repairing the same
• Making “rounds” to ensure compliance with Life Safety Codes and department policies
• Efficiently manages time, completes task assigned including accurate documentation
• Sound understanding of using electrical testing equipment
• Assist Mechanic II’s when requested

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent required. Three years preferred in two or more building crafts, such as plumbing, commercial electric work, refrigeration and air conditioning, pneumatics, etc. Minimum Type Level I and II refrigerant transition and recovery certification required within six months of hire.

This position requires driving a hospital-owned vehicle and/or a personally owned vehicle to perform the essential job duties. Must have a valid and current state issued driver’s license. Must maintain and provide proof of automobile insurance (at own expense) in amounts which meet at least the minimum liability coverage limits required by the state of their residence. Clearance of driving record check. Driving records shall not contain any of the following within the past 3 years (see policy):

• 3 or more moving violations
• 2 or more accidents
• 1 major violation

Physical Demands:

Must possess good physical health. Some requirements include but are not limited to standing, sitting or walking for long periods of time. Lifting at least 100 pounds is required. Must be able to work with a moderate level of noise.
Physical Effort required: Constant (67%-100%) - lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, talking, hearing, seeing
Frequently (34%-66%) - climbing (stairs, ladders, etc.), balancing, stooping, crouching, reaching, handling/feeling
Occasionally (1%-33%) - crawling
