Job summary

Sonoco in Columbia, SC is seeking a skilled maintenance technician for 1st shift. The role involves troubleshooting, repairs, and preventative maintenance of plant equipment, with conveyors and sorting systems included.

You will document maintenance activities and ensure machines meet safety and efficiency standards. Qualifications include 2–4 years of relevant experience, technical school accreditation, and proficiency with cutting, welding, and grinding.

Qualifications

  • Accreditation from a technical school or skilled trades program and 2–4 years of experience.
  • Proficient in cutting, welding, and grinding.
  • Ability to lift 10–50 lbs., often carrying up to 20 lbs.
  • Can follow directions and work as part of a team.
  • Has physical stamina and dexterity, with bending, twisting, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and reaching frequently.
  • Working knowledge of hand tools, power tools and precision measuring instruments to repair and maintain machinery.

Responsibilities

  • Carries out documentation of maintenance records using CMMS and ensures new machines are prepared for operation following protocols.

location: Columbia, SC Rate: $27.49- $31.50 ( depends on experience) Hours: 1st shift

What you will be doing:
  • Troubleshoots, repairs, and adjusts equipment as needed.
  • Performs equipment changeovers according to production demands.
  • Provides preventative maintenance to plant equipment.
  • Rebuilds conveyors and sorting equipment.
  • Evaluates/maintains hand tools for condition and compliance.
  • Familiar with Mechanical Prints, knowledge of motors and controls, troubleshooting skills.
  • PLC programming is a plus.
  • Ability to use hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment safely.
  • Continuous improvement of skills as outlined by the maintenance training matrix.
  • Effective communication skills including the ability to receive and follow direction and provide feedback as requested, as well as with other maintenance employees.
  • Works cooperatively with teammates as a natural work team.
  • Work schedule is 40-48 hours/week plus overtime requirements.
  • Accurate documentation of maintenance records using CMMS System.
  • Ensures new machines are prepared for operation following protocols and procedures and perform regular technical testing to ensure their safety and efficiency.
  • Collect data on machine operation and suggests actions to reduce machine downtime.
  • Carry out additional duties as requested by supervisor.

  • Can handle moderately complex issues and problems and refers more complex issues to higher-level staff.
  • Possess solid working knowledge of subject matter.
  • Received accreditation from a technical school or an applicable skilled trades program and 2 to 4 years of experience.
  • Proficient and experienced in Cutting, Welding, Grinding (Required)
  • Ability to lift 10-50 lbs., often carrying up to 20 lbs.
  • Can follow directions and work as part of a team.
  • Have physical stamina and dexterity. Job requires bending, twisting, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and reaching frequently.
  • Have a working knowledge of using hand tools, power tools and precision measuring and testing instruments to repair and maintain, in accordance with diagrams, sketches, operation manuals, and manufacturer's specifications, machinery and mechanical equipment, such as engines, motors, pneumatic tools, conveyor systems, and production machines and equipment.
