Job summary

Rochester YMCA in New York is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic to oversee interior and exterior building and grounds upkeep. The role includes on-call shifts, event setup, and supervising weekend staff, with a focus on timely, quality maintenance per YMCA standards.

The position requires 3+ years in building maintenance across trades, 18+ years old with a HS diploma or GED. Pay rate is $18–$20 per hour plus a free YMCA membership and flexible hours.

Qualifications

• Must be 18+ years old with high school diploma or GED.
• Trade position requiring knowledge of building mechanics, operations and equipment.
• Minimum of three years in building maintenance across trades (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, masonry, carpentry, energy management).
• Ability to operate maintenance equipment or willingness to learn.

Responsibilities

• Perform preventative maintenance for the branch.
• Repair and maintain building surfaces, structures, property and equipment as directed.
• Maintain pool and filter areas.
• Inspect and maintain custodial equipment.
• Assist in quality control of building cleanliness and supervise weekend staff.
• Paint premises and perform restoration projects as directed.
• Report damages or needed repairs to Building & Grounds Director.
• Assist and direct work for other building mechanics.
• Be on-call for building emergencies as backup to Director.
• Set up, take down, and store program equipment.
• Shovel snow and salt sidewalks in inclement weather.
• All other duties as assigned.

Under the direction of the Building & Grounds Director, the Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for the general maintenance of the interior and exterior of the building and grounds areas. The candidate may serve as designee to assist in shift assignments, interact with other departments and set up for meetings or special events. Helps sweeping and general clean up of the branch including locker rooms and fitness areas. The candidate should accomplish tasks in an efficient and timely manner in accordance with YMCA of Greater Rochester standards.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Performs preventative maintenance tasks for the branch.
• Repairs and maintains building surfaces, structures, property and operating equipment as directed by the Building & Grounds Director.
• Maintains pool and filter areas.
• Inspects, cleans and maintains custodial equipment.
• Assists Building & Grounds Director in the quality control of building cleanliness and perform custodial duties as needed.
• Paints premises and performs construction restoration projects as directed by the Building & Grounds Director.
• Reports to the Building and Grounds Director any damage to property or needed repairs.
• Helps supervise cleaning and weekend staff.
• Assists and directs work for other building mechanics.
• Remains accessible and on-call for building emergencies as a back up to the Building & Grounds Director.
• Sets up, takes down, and stores program equipment as needed and consistently.
• Shovels snow, clears and salts sidewalk in inclement weather.
• All other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• The candidate must be 18 years of age and possess a high school diploma or GED.
• Candidates need to be dependable and work well with staff, members and guests.
• This position is a trade position and requires general knowledge of building mechanics, operations and equipment.
• The candidate should possess a minimum of three years of experience in building maintenance with a skilled background in one or more of the various trade disciplines (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, masonry, carpentry, and energy management).
• The ability to operate maintenance equipment or willingness to acquire the necessary skills is a requirement of this position.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Must be able to stand for the duration of the shift.
• Must be able to bend, stoop and reach.
• Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds.
