Job summary

Behr Iron & Metal, part of Alter Trading Corporation, seeks a maintenance technician at its Rockford, IL location. You will lead hands-on maintenance, oversee PM programs, troubleshoot equipment, and coordinate with the team to minimize downtime while ensuring safety and regulatory compliance.

Required are 5+ years in maintenance, a high school diploma or GED, and a valid driver’s license. Welding/fabrication skills are a plus; outdoor work is expected.

• Ability to lift 30–50 pounds and work outdoors.

Responsibilities

• Promote and follow safety programs and regulatory requirements.

• Direct team in maintenance and repair of plant equipment, facilities, cranes, and hoists.
• Provide mechanical expertise to reduce downtime and maintain equipment status.
• Maintain documentation and communicate equipment availability to management.

Job description

We are looking for someone who is reliable, mechanically inclined, and teachable who has the ability to learn our metal recycling industry specific equipment including an Auto Shredder.

ABOUT THE MAINTENANCE ROLE:

• Actively promote plant safety programs and procedures that follow company and regulatory requirements, striving for continuous improvement in all areas of responsibility.
• Oversee all maintenance and preventative maintenance programs, including troubleshooting and repair, and perform hands-on maintenance work.
• Direct the team engaged in the maintenance and repair of plant equipment, machinery and facilities, electronic and electrical repair, maintenance of building, repair of material handling equipment such as cranes and hoist and all other associated or related equipment.
• Provide mechanical expertise to reduce equipment downtime.
• Maintain appropriate documentation and records as needed to properly track and maintain equipment status.
• Communicate successfully with the team to ensure department and facility manager are informed on equipment availability.
• Performs other Duties as assigned.

ABOUT YOU:

• 5+ years in a similar maintenance environment
• Diesel power over hydraulic experience, preferred
• High school diploma or GED required.
• Two-year AAS (technical degree) and/or technical certification in welding, hydraulics, electrical systems or industrial mechanics preferred.
• Ability to do welding and fabricating work, preferred.(inspect)
• Must have experience troubleshooting low voltage circuitry – 24 volt; 12 volt; or 10 volt.
• Strong verbal and written communication and organizational skills required. Timely follow up is critical in this position. Communications must be detailed, respectful and constructive.
• Familiarity with heavy mobile equipment such as forklifts, loaders, and material separators a plus
• Ability to lift a minimum of 30-50 pounds.
• Ability to utilize Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel to communicate and track information.
• Candidates must possess a valid driver’s license.
• Willingness to work outside
