Job description

Job Purpose

The Maintenance Mechanic maintains equipment according to the Preventive Maintenance program, diagnoses and repairs mechanical problems, and performs emergency and proactive repairs of buildings and grounds, production equipment and machinery while minimizing downtime.

Key Job Elements
  • Core competencies: Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, Hydraulics, Pneumatics, Welding/Cutting, Service/Repair of equipment, General office and shop repairs.
  • Knowledge of LOTO and SDS.
  • Maintain equipment according to Preventive Maintenance program.
  • Repair emergency/reactive repairs of production equipment and machinery, minimizing downtime.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical problems; replace or repair parts in mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic components.
  • Maintain the work area and equipment in a clean, orderly condition and follow prescribed safety procedures.
  • Fabricate, assemble, or disassemble manufactured products.
  • Read blueprints, technical drawings, and measuring devices.
  • Read and understand work orders and record repairs correctly.
  • Understand service and repair manuals and apply constraints to repairs and modifications performed.
  • Use oxy/fuel torch arc welding equipment and power tools.
  • Perform inspection of completed maintenance and document results.
  • Complete and maintain paperwork for maintenance performed.
  • Assist in other work areas as needed and directed by the department supervisor.
  • Operate forklifts, overhead cranes, and other equipment as necessary.
  • Comply with all plant safety and environmental regulations and maintain a safe, organized, and clean work environment.
  • Read and follow QWI and other work instructions necessary to properly assemble product.
  • Train other employees.
Education / Training
  • High School Diploma; required.
  • 1-2 years of experience.
  • Certified/Licensed in Industrial Maintenance and/or experience as an Industrial Maintenance Mechanic.
Qualifications And Experience
  • Basic computer skills.
  • OSHA 10 hours certified.
  • Mechanic and technical aptitude.
  • Experience working from blueprints and technical drawings.
  • Read precision instruments and gauges.
  • Capable use of hand and power tools, including pneumatic tools, cutting torches, and welding machines.
  • PLC experience.
  • Knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic equipment.
Physical Requirements

Strength: Requires lifting of up to 50 lbs and stamina to work in tight and confined spaces while repairing locomotive components.

Motion: Requires standing for the majority of the day with occasional sitting, frequent walking, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and reaching with hands and arms.

Vision/Hearing: Exposed to high levels of noise and vibration from using tools; requires good short and long‑distance vision, depth perception, and focusing ability.

PPE: Use of proper personal protective equipment is required.

Work Environment: Inside or outside; exposed to temperature extremes, oils, lubricants, and close proximity to moving mechanical parts and heavy equipment.
