Job summary

Synagro in New Haven, Connecticut, is seeking a Mechanical Maintenance Technician to perform all phases of mechanical maintenance throughout the plant. Responsibilities include preventative, corrective, and emergency mechanical maintenance under the guidance of the Operations Manager, as well as conducting predictive analysis of equipment.

The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma or equivalent and strong mechanical aptitude, alongside effective communication skills. The position offers a comprehensive benefits package.

Job Summary

Perform all phases of mechanical maintenance throughout the plant, safely and effectively, and meet all company, state, and local regulations/policies.

Essential Job Functions / Responsibilities

1. Perform preventative, corrective and emergency mechanical maintenance on all equipment throughout the plant under the direction of the Operations Manager, including welding, piping and rebuild equipment.
2. Conduct predictive analysis of all systems and equipment.
3. Identify, troubleshoot and repair mechanical malfunctions throughout the plant, documenting problems and resolutions and reporting to the Operations Manager.
4. Perform fire guard duty and confined space watch.
5. Participate in and complete training programs within the allotted timeframe.
6. Observe contract workers when necessary.
7. Maintain work tools and store them securely after use.
8. Enforce and maintain standard safety procedures.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

1. Ability to weld, fit pipe, rebuild equipment, use equipment tools, set and align rotating equipment.
2. Knowledge of all shop equipment and hand tools, including drill press, grinder, band saw.
3. Mechanical knowledge to identify and correct mechanical malfunctions.
4. Knowledge of cutting and rigging techniques.
5. Ability to read and comprehend instructional manuals, instruction sheets, technical data, work orders and mechanical drawings in English.
6. Availability to work varying shifts, weekends, holidays, on‑call duty and emergency call‑ins.
7. Effective verbal and written communication skills.
8. Ability to understand and follow instructions, given verbally or in writing.
9. Basic reading, writing and arithmetic skills.
10. Knowledge of occupational hazards associated with machine shop and general plant practices focusing on safety compliance.
11. Ability to operate powered equipment safely and efficiently, including industrial forklifts and manlifts.
12. Ability to operate hand and powered tools safely and efficiently on the ground and at heights.
13. Ability to ascend and descend stairs and stationary vertical ladders as part of normal work activity and emergency egress.

Education / Experience

1. Minimum High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) with strong mechanical aptitude.
2. Experience with computerized maintenance programs (MP2) or similar PM system preferred.

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements

1. Talking, hearing, seeing.
2. Sitting, standing, walking, fingering, feeling, grasping, climbing, and lifting up to 100 lbs.
3. Work in protected indoor conditions but exposure to temperature changes.
4. Work in environments with sufficient noise that requires speaking above ambient level.
5. Exposure to hazards including proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current; work on scaffolding, high places, high heat, bio‑solids.
6. Exposure to vibration from oscillating movements of extremities or whole body.
7. Frequent close quarters, crawl spaces, shafts, manholes, small enclosed rooms, small sewage and water line pipes which could cause claustrophobia.
