Job summary

Pleasants power station is seeking a skilled Maintenance Mechanic to lead up to three technicians in repairing and maintaining boilers, turbines, pumps, air compressors, and associated plant equipment. You will perform rigging, alignment, welding, piping, and preventive maintenance while adhering to safety protocols.

The role requires a two-year technical degree, the ability to read drawings and blueprints, experience with precision measurement tools, and a focus on safe work practices.

Qualifications

  • Valid driver's licenses and ability to work at heights or in confined spaces.
  • Effective communication and leadership to direct a small team.

Responsibilities

  • Performs rigging, dismantling, overhauling, repairing, testing, and assembly of rotating equipment; operates cranes for lifts.
  • Selects rigging gear based on load, inspects safety gear, and develops rigging plans with load calculations.
  • Fabricates or reproduces parts, tools, jigs, fixtures, and assemblies; makes sketches as needed.
  • Performs layout and fitting of sheet metal and steel components.
  • Operates, maintains, and uses hand and shop tools for drilling, grinding, cutting, and forming.
  • Aligns rotating equipment using dial indicators and performs precision laser alignment.
  • Performs non-code welding, welding of piping, and maintains welding certifications.
  • Inspects, tests, installs, adjusts, maintains, repairs, and troubleshoots plant mechanical equipment.
  • Overhauls drives like pumps, air compressors, valves, and related systems; tests equipment.

Description

The Maintenance Mechanic, under general directive supervision, works with and as a job lead could direct up to three (3) employees in performing skilled mechanical repair work on all plant equipment (air compressors, turbines, generators, pumps, fans, air heaters, blowers, etc.); all mechanical equipment (boilers, pulverizes, feeders, heat exchangers, condensers, valves, etc.); and all plant auxiliary equipment (yard equipment, power piping, etc.). Mechanical work includes assembly, non-code welding, sheet metal work, pipe fitting, machining, and rigging.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities
  • Performs rigging, dismantling, overhauling, repairing, testing, and assembly of rotating, mechanical, and auxiliary plant equipment; operates overhead and mobile cranes for both routine and precision lifts.
  • Selects appropriate rigging equipment (slings, chains, ropes, etc.) based on load requirements; inspects all rigging gear for safety and integrity; and develops detailed rigging plans including load calculations, lift points, and movement paths.
  • Fabricates or reproduces specialized parts, tools, jigs, fixtures, and assemblies; takes measurements and prepares sketches as needed.
  • Performs layout and fitting of sheet metal and steel plate components.
  • Operates and maintains hand and shop tools; performs drilling, grinding, cutting, shearing, filing, bending, forming, and chipping.
  • Aligns rotating equipment using dial indicator methods and performs precision laser alignment.
  • Performs non-code welding, including brazing, soldering, electric arc welding, and oxyacetylene cutting; fabricates and maintains plant piping; prepares and applies metal surfaces to components; maintains structural (plate) welding certification.
  • Inspects, tests, installs, adjusts, maintains, repairs, and troubleshoots plant mechanical equipment.
  • Overhauls and repairs mechanical systems such as feedwater pumps, circulating pumps, drive gears, air compressors, pulverizes, condensers, and feedwater heaters, both in place and in shop settings.
  • Performs precision hand-fitting and scraping of bearings to close tolerances.
  • Repairs and replaces manual, motor-operated, and hydraulic valves of several types and pressures; grinds, reseats, and repacks valves and pump shafts.
  • Performs insulation and refractory installation and repair.
  • Conducts confined space monitoring and completes all required documentation, including time, date, and readings.
  • Erects and dismantles approved scaffolding in accordance with safety standards.
  • Troubleshoots mechanical issues, determines corrective actions, sources required parts, and stages materials for job execution.
  • Conducts operational and diagnostic testing, including leak testing of valves and heat exchangers, and post-maintenance equipment test runs.
  • Plans, assigns, and oversee maintenance work; provides direction, training, and on-the-job guidance to team members.
  • Performs general facility maintenance tasks, including carpentry, painting, plumbing, heating, and basic structural work.
  • Accurately documents maintenance activities and records in accordance with job requirements.
  • Ensures all work is performed safely and that team members are always protected.
  • Assists in developing and improving maintenance procedures and methodologies.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the FE Clearance Procedure.
  • Completes pre-task safety analyses and provides post-task feedback.
  • Performs additional duties, including related or less complex tasks, as assigned.
  • Maintains a clean, organized, and safe work environment, including tools and equipment.
Requirements
  • Requires a minimum of a two-year technical degree relevant to the position, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Must successfully complete all Performance Task Evaluations for the Maintenance Mechanic role, pass required qualification tests within 18 months, and complete all required training while maintaining competency in the skills learned.
  • Demonstrates the ability to accurately use precision measuring instruments, including micrometers, calipers, vernier calipers, screw pitch gauges, thickness gauges, and levels, to a tolerance of 0.001.
  • Possesses knowledge of firefighting equipment, first aid procedures, and resuscitation techniques.
  • Maintains a strong working knowledge of safe rigging and scaffolding practices applicable to the role.
  • Familiar with maintenance work management systems or comparable platforms.
  • Demonstrates proficiency and hands-on experience with turbines, valves, pumps, air compressors, pulverizing overhauls, coal yard equipment repairs, and other rotating equipment.
  • Maintains comprehensive knowledge of plant maintenance, repair processes, safety procedures, and required documentation and recordkeeping relevant to job responsibilities.
  • Ability to interpret and perform work based on specifications, complex drawings, and blueprints, ensuring strict adherence to all requirements.
  • Possesses a working knowledge of plant layout and the functions of various equipment within generating facilities.
  • Holds and maintains all valid driver’s license(s) required to perform job duties.
  • Demonstrates safe and effective use of vehicles, cranes, slings, bars, rollers, and other equipment necessary for the role.
  • Capable of working at heights and in confined or restricted spaces.
  • Effectively communicates and relays instructions to team members, fostering a safe, cooperative, and productive work environment.
