The Role

The Plant Maintenance Manager is responsible for leading all maintenance activities within the facility to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation of production equipment, utilities, refrigeration systems, buildings, and grounds. This role develops and executes preventive and predictive maintenance strategies, drives continuous improvement initiatives, manages maintenance personnel, and ensures compliance with all food safety, regulatory, environmental, and safety requirements.

The Maintenance Manager partners closely with Operations, Quality Assurance, Safety, and Engineering teams to maximize equipment reliability, improve plant performance, and achieve operational and financial objectives.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Maintenance & Asset Reliability
  • Lead all maintenance activities for production equipment, utilities, refrigeration systems, PIT equipment, and facility infrastructure.
  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve preventive and predictive maintenance programs to maximize equipment uptime and reliability.
  • Ensure all equipment is maintained in accordance with manufacturer specifications, food safety requirements, and engineering best practices.
  • Schedule maintenance activities to minimize production interruptions and downtime.
  • Drive root cause analysis and corrective actions for equipment failures and recurring issues.
  • Recommend equipment upgrades, modifications, and capital improvements that improve safety, reliability, productivity, and cost performance.
  • Manage maintenance shop operations, tools, equipment, and maintenance resources.
CMMS & Planning
  • Maintain and optimize the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Ensure accurate tracking of work orders, preventive maintenance activities, spare parts inventory, labor utilization, and equipment history.
  • Improve maintenance planning and scheduling processes to increase planned work and reduce emergency repairs.
  • Develop and maintain maintenance procedures, standard work instructions, and training materials.
Leadership & Team Development
  • Recruit, develop, coach, and lead maintenance technicians and supervisors.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and establish development plans for maintenance personnel.
  • Ensure technicians are properly trained, qualified, equipped, and accountable.
  • Promote a positive culture of teamwork, accountability, continuous improvement, and operational excellence.
  • Address employee relations, performance management, and disciplinary matters in accordance with company policies.
Safety, Food Safety & Compliance
  • Maintain a safe working environment by enforcing all company safety programs and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, USDA,, local regulatory requirements, and company food safety standards.
  • Support and participate in food safety, quality, GMP, HACCP, SQF, and audit activities.
  • Lead maintenance-related safety initiatives, inspections, and corrective action programs.
  • Ensure maintenance activities support sanitation and plant cleanliness standards.
Budget & Cost Management
  • Develop and manage the annual maintenance budget.
  • Monitor and report monthly performance against budget.li>
  • Control maintenance spending while maintaining equipment reliability and asset longevity.
  • Manage repair and maintenance (R&M) expenditures, requisitions, vendor relationships, and contractor services.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce cost, waste, and downtime through Lean Manufacturing and Continuous Improvement initiatives.
Parts & Inventory Management
  • Maintain appropriate inventories of spare parts, maintenance supplies, and critical equipment components.
  • Ensure accurate inventory control, min/max levels, and purchasing practices.
  • Continuously improve inventory accuracy and cost effectiveness.
Operational Partnership
  • Collaborate with Operations to coordinate maintenance activities and support production goals.
  • Partner with Quality Assurance to ensure maintenance supports food safety and quality objectives.
  • Participate in plant performance reviews, strategic planning, capital planning, and operational improvement initiatives.
  • Support facility expansions, equipment installations, and capital projects.

Job Requirements:

Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, preferably Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related technical field preferred.
  • Minimum 8 years of maintenance leadership experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Minimum 5 years in a Maintenance Manager or equivalent leadership role.
  • Food manufacturing experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of industrial production equipment, utilities, refrigeration systems, packaging systems, and facility infrastructure.
Technical Skills
  • Experience with Preventive Maintenance (PM), Predictive Maintenance (PdM), Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM), and Root Cause Analysis (RCA).
  • Proficiency with CMMS systems and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to interpret equipment manuals, technical drawings, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Strong understanding of maintenance planning, scheduling, budgeting, and inventory management.
  • Proven ability to develop and lead high-performing maintenance teams.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Self-motivated, dependable, and results-oriented.
Additional Requirements
  • Valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record.
  • Strong history of safe work practices and performance.
  • Ability to work extended hours and respond to off-shift emergencies when necessary.
