Job summary

Job description

The Maintenance Worker performs a variety of general maintenance, repair, and custodial duties to support the safe and effective operation of parish facilities. This role completes routine tasks, assists with basic repairs, and supports cleaning and event setup needs under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor or Operations Manager, depending on parish structure.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The duties and functions outlined herein are representative of the types of tasks performed within this classification. They are not listed in any order of importance.   • Performs routine maintenance and minor preventive maintenance for buildings, equipment, and property.
  • Provides general custodial and janitorial services, including cleaning, disinfecting, trash removal, restroom cleaning and restocking, and floor care (sweeping, scrubbing, vacuuming).
  • Cleans and performs basic preventive maintenance on equipment, tools, and building systems.
  • Maintains building interiors by cleaning and polishing furniture, fixtures, mirrors, and equipment; washing windows, counters, walls, and woodwork.
  • Sets up and breaks down furniture and equipment for parish functions and events.
  • Performs minor repairs, including painting, basic plumbing, electrical work, and other routine maintenance; services equipment when able and reports mechanical malfunctions requiring additional support.
  • Cleans, maintains, and ensures proper use of tools and equipment.
  • Identifies, reports, and addresses safety hazards and maintenance concerns.
  • Monitors premises and reports unauthorized individuals or security concerns.
  • Assists with general upkeep of parish facilities as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Performs grounds maintenance activities including mowing, edging, weed-eating, blowing, planting, and mulching.
  • Performs shrubbery and tree maintenance activities, i.e., pruning limbs, shaping hedges, cutting branches.
  • Operates and maintains groundskeeping equipment, including mowers, trimmers, blowers, and other tools, in a safe and effective manner.
  • Maintains grounds to ensure cleanliness, safety, and environmentally appropriate conditions; identifies and reports maintenance or safety concerns.
  • Ensures proper cleaning and maintenance of equipment, tools, and materials utilized; ensures adherence to principles and practices of safe use and operation of equipment, tools, and materials.
  • Assists with maintaining irrigation systems.
  • Removes trash by emptying trash containers; transporting materials to disposal area; recycling materials.
  • Responds to and takes appropriate actions in the event of emergency or critical incidents to resolve, confine or otherwise prevent potentially injurious or hazardous conditions. Is aware of and reports any unauthorized person on the premises.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or equivalent. Relevant experience in similar position preferred.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES
  • Must have working knowledge of all building systems, HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing, etc.
  • Individual should have the knowledge and skills to diagnose trouble issues, make minor repairs and be able to work with outside vendors to get repairs done to the building systems.
  • Knowledge of the proper use and disposal of hazardous materials, safe handling techniques, and use of proper safety equipment as outlined by OSHA.
  • Must have repair skills for minor equipment used inside or outside.
  • Must be self-motivated and prompt in performing tasks.
  • Must successfully pass Diocesan background screening and Safe Environment Training.
  • Basic knowledge of grounds equipment operation preferred.
  • Ability to operate grounds maintenance equipment safely.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work independently or as part of a team.
  • Ability to perform physical work in outdoor environments.
  • Basic understanding of safety practices and proper equipment handling.
WORKING CONDITIONS

The working hours of this position are not limited to an 8-hour day. This person will need to be available in the evening and weekends, as needed. Must be willing to work in conditions of stress and function well under pressure.

PHYSICAL and SENSORY REQUIREMENTS

Tasks involve the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing 15 feet and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, bending, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (30 pounds). Exposure to climate changes, uncomfortable temperatures, and fumes. Works with machinery requiring considerable caution.
