Job description

The Crew Leader supervises and directs landscape maintenance activities and procedures at the assigned job sites or routes, established by company policy and with specific direction from the Production/Account Manager. Identifies opportunities for improvements in production, cost efficiencies and safety in all aspects of the job, while emphasizing and exceeding our clients’ expectations. The Associate provides support to crew members on a daily basis ensuring the fulfillment of the company’s vision, goals and strategy. Consistently enforces and complies with all company safety standards, safety policies, procedures and fleet programs.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Receives assigned job site information from Production Manager and discusses any special instructions that may apply, including job schedules.
  2. Communicates with the Production Manager frequently on personnel issues that may arise with crew members to ensure proper delegation of duties.
  3. Recommends changes in methods, schedules, and procedures for job efficiency.
  4. Organizes, directs, and requests the proper equipment and personnel needed for timely task completion with assistance from the Production Manager.
  5. Informs the Production Manager of job progress and potential problems including equipment and small tool condition needs of the crew.
  6. Supervises and directs crew members to prepare equipment, tools and supplies necessary for the day’s work.
  7. Instructs crew members of job assignments upon arrival to the job site, and provides specifics and schedules then supervises their progression so that work is completed efficiently and timely.
  8. Observes all safety rules strictly and ensures that fellow workers observe all safety practices including utilizing required safety equipment.
  9. Uses the proper equipment to perform all jobs safely, making accident prevention a part of daily conduct.
  10. Maintains readiness and willingness to assist and train crew members in all aspects of daily activities and shall maintain the leadership role.
  11. Maintains neat and organized housekeeping standards on the job, truck bed, truck cab, trailer and assigned field area.
  12. Ensures proper workflow of documentation and timely completion of all timesheets to Production Manager.
  13. Ensures appropriate rest periods and meal periods are taken within company requirements.
  14. Operates and maintains a company assigned vehicle in accordance with the Fleet Safety and Vehicle Management Policy, if assigned.
  15. Observes the Company’s policies and procedures including dress standards, accurate time sheet payroll reporting and all related job records.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  1. Basic working knowledge of ornamental horticulture and or agronomy.
  2. Basic working knowledge of common ornamental landscape pests, diseases and the proper treatment and chemical application.
  3. Basic understanding of a broad range of irrigation system, controllers, including weather management irrigation controllers.
  4. Effective administrative, organizational and time management skills with attention to detail.
  5. Must be able to apply principles of logical thinking to define problems and initiate appropriate course of action.
  6. Ability to demonstrate initiative, personal awareness, a high degree of professionalism and business decorum while maintaining quality and technically proficient work.
  7. Must be able to follow written or verbal orders.
  8. Must be able to delegate work and accept responsibility.
  9. Ability to efficiently and accurately use an electronic hand held device to record Associate time worked.
  10. Bilingual in English and Spanish.

REQUIRED LICENSE/CERTIFICATION

  1. Must possess a valid California Driver’s License and auto insurance.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  1. Minimum 3 years’ experience in commercial landscape maintenance.
  2. Prior experience in the Landscape Maintenance Industry is required with emphasis in crew management, landscape maintenance routing, and proper and safe equipment use and implementation.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Lifting, carrying and manipulating objects up to 50 pounds for varying periods of time. Constant standing, sitting, walking, stooping, squatting, bending, climbing, twisting, traversing uneven ground, reaching, pulling, stretching, grasping and gripping (hand tools and equipment), getting in and out of vehicles (vehicle cab and bed) throughout the day.
  2. Must be able to wear all personal protective equipment according to company Safety Health and Environmental Policies, Industry Related ANSI Safety Requirements and OSHA Regulations.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  1. Working conditions are outdoors with exposure to the following: Hot and cold temperatures, sudden changes in temperatures, varying levels of noise, slippery surfaces, rain, dust/dirt, fumes, wind, uneven ground and landscaped slopes.

EQUIPMENT/MACHINERY

  1. Mowers of varying size: 21” through riding mowers. Gas powered hedge trimmers, weed whips and back-pack blowers. A wide range of hand tools including but not limited to: loppers, shears, pruners, hand saw, bow rake, leaf rake, pole pruner, pole saw, push broom and shovels.
